TROUBLESHOOTING
PROPANE LIQUID METERS
Is your propane transfer operations on bobtails or cylinder filling dispensers slowing down periodically or stopping altogether on an occasional basis. Maybe you have a meter problem instead of a pump problem.
A propane meter system is comprised of at least 5 different components designed to perform different functions.
The meter system consists of:
1) Strainer
2) Vapor Eliminator
3) Measuring Chamber
4) Differential Valve
5) Register (print or non-print)(mechanical or electronic)
If your transfer system appears to show signs of slowing down, your meter system may have debris (sand, oxidation, trash, rust) collecting in the strainer that is blocking the normal flow of propane through the meter.
But, if your flow is intermittent and occasionally sounds like something is shutting down the flow, then you may have a vapor eliminator issue or a differential valve failure. If the vapor eliminator allows liquid to flow through the valve assembly to on top of the differential valve it will try to shut down the flow through the differential valve. Additionally, if the differential valve has a leaking o-ring (1" meters) or diaphragm (1-1/4" or larger meters) and lets liquid through to on top of the differential valve, that will cause the valve to close also. And, if you have a meter with an electronic register and electric 3-way security solenoid valve; you could have a stuck or bad solenoid or debris holding it open.
If you need help troubleshooting any of these situations, Gas Equipment Company sales representatives attend manufacturer-factory training classes to be able to support the products we sell. At Gas Equipment Company we also offer a FREE on-site training program, "My Truck/Dispenser Won't Pump" that reviews the complete in-process and transfer control operations of a pump and meter system.
Call one of our sales representatives or your branch office to schedule a training class.
