PERFORMANCE PIPE
Introduces User-Friendly AUTOCOILED PACKAGING of PE Pipe.

PP Banner
Beginning in July, Performance Pipe will be supplying its ½", ¾" and 1" coils of
natural gas tubing in stretch-wrapped autocoils. Historically this tubing has been banded. The new autocoil packaging offers multiple benefits to customers. When the stretch-wrapped coils are stacked, the plastic wrapping provides a "tacky" surface that helps maintain silo integrity. While the coils are easily lifted off the stack when needed, the interim result is less slipping and sliding of coils that can occur when banded pipe is stacked. Performance Pipe also encases the entire silo in a black, UV protectant stretch-wrap that further stabilizes the stack with the added benefit of preventing damage during shipment.

Although the stretch-wrapped coils look different, they perform as well or better than traditional coils in the field. The tubing can be unrolled by hand or by spool just as easily as banded coils. The coils unroll from the center, rather than the outside edge; however, the pipe easily unwinds by pulling from underneath the axle, or in the same direction as the pipe is coiled.
PP

Benefits of the new packaging include:
· Reduced surface damage during shipping & transportation
· Installers can easily unroll by hand
· Reduced field scrap, unused portion is easily tucked inside the package
· UV protection

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING INDIVIDUAL ROLLS

1. Do not remove the clear stretch wrap as it maintains the coil integrity of individual coils.
2. Unroll the coil by pulling the pipe end from the inside center of the coil, leaving the clear outer stretch wrap in place.
3. If unrolling by hand, unroll pipe in the direction the ID pipe end is pointing.
4. If using uncoiling equipment, spools or cages, modification of the equipment may be necessary to allow for uncoiling from the center of the coil rather than the OD.
5. Return any unused pipe to the ID of the coil by tucking pipe back into the clear stretch wrap for storage.

"Did You Know?"

NFPA 704 Regulations

NFPA704

There is misleading information floating around about a 2001 change to NFPA 704 decals for propane.

According to statements from NFPA the Health Hazard rating did change from a "1" to a "2" for propane; and this change occurred in 2001, ten years ago.  Recent statements of a deadline for replacing existing decals with a rating of 1-4-0 with a new decal with a 2-4-0 as of June 30, 2011 are incorrect and erroneous.

NFPA has confirmed there is currently no deadline by which changes must be made to existing markings on propane containers or to require the replacement of "704" decals showing a "1" health hazard to a "2" health hazard. All new decals being manufactured will reference the new "2" health hazard; but you can continue to utilize existing unused "1" health hazard "704" decals.

RegO 5769H Male ACME Coupling with Screen & Marshall Excelsior M130A Female ACME Coupling with Screen

SOLUTIONS for Complying with Section 6.18.2.5 of NFPA 58 (2008 & 2011)

5769H

RegO 5769HVB Shown

Includes Vent Valve

GEC offers the RegO (A)5769H male ACME coupling and the Marshall Excelsior ME130A Female ACME coupling which DO incorporate a screen in the coupling to meet the requirements of the section 6.18.2.5 rule.

On dedicated transport unloading bulkheads or the dedicated transport riser of a three-hole bulkhead with no hoses you can use the RegO (A)5769H male ACME coupling to comply with the rule.  It is a male 3-1/4" ACME by 2" MNPT coupling incorporating a screen and can be threaded into a valve or fitting.

 ME130A

The simple and quick compliance solution for two-hole bulkheads with hoses or transport unloading risers with existing hoses is the use of the Marshall Excelsior ME130A female ACME coupling.  It is a female 3-1/4" ACME x 2" MNPT coupling incorporating a screen to comply with the rule and can be threaded directly into the transfer hose cutoff valve.  This solution allows you to immediately inspect the screen at disconnection for captured foreign material after unloading from a transport.

WITH the ADOPTION of either THE 2008 or 2011 Editions by your AHJ, BE AWARE THAT EXISTING INSTALLATIONS ARE NOT GRANDFATHERED AND ALL INSTALLATIONS MUST COMPLY with this regulation ON OR BEFORE JULY 1, 2011; the same date as the deadline for storage upgrade rules.

What's Wrong with This Picture?

Whats Wrong

A GEC Sales Representative (SR) received a call that a generator was running improperly and wanted help troubleshooting the situation.
Upon his arrival the SR had the marketer crank the generator engine and listened to it surging.  Assuming there was a fuel supply issue he started at the tank inspecting the lines and regulators.
As soon as he saw the above regulator setup it was obvious to him where the problem was.

Observations of the installation:

  • Two regulators, a first stage & a second stage connected together to make an integral regulator; not normally a problem.
  •

  • Except when you connect the Outlet of the second stage regulator to the Outlet of the first stage regulator. (Notice the removable regulator orfices on opposite ends of each regulator; the second stage inlet orifice should be connected to the first stage outlet.)

  • Since the second stage regulator now had 10 psig propane vapor pressure on the Outlet side or downstream of the seat and disc assembly of the second stage regulator, it caused the regulator to lock-up shutting off discharge through the inlet; but at the same time was causing a downstream overpressure issue on the second stage regulator causing the internal relief valve to open and vent propane vapor out the vent.

  • The installer's solution, not knowing he had accidentally connected the second stage regulator backwards, was to pipe the relief vent opening to the engine carburetor inlet (see copper tubing connection).

  • Yes the engine actually cranked and ran; albeit not correctly or smoothly.
  •

If you come across interesting or amusing situations involving propane installations and want to share them with the rest of the industry; please email them to GEC e-Newsletter and we will publish appropriate photos periodically.
