"Did You Know?" Vertical Tank

...the LP-Gas Code Requires: Vertical ASME containers over 125-gal water capacity and designed for permanent installation in stationary service, require fire protection for the steel leg supports?

NFPA 58*, section 5.2.7.1 (B) of the 2011, 2008 & 2004 editions and section 2.2.5.2 of the

2001 edition, states, steel supports shall be protected against fire exposure with a material having a fire resistance rating of at least 2 hours.

Why Protect Steel from Fire?

Steel retains approximately only 50% of its strength when it reaches 1,100°F (600°C).  Temperatures during fires, especially hydrocarbon fires, can be much hotter - a standard fire test reaches 1300°F (704°C) in the first 10 minutes. If left unprotected, the support structure may collapse when exposed to fire.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code requires certain support structures to have fire resistance ratings which are determined on the basis of standard fire tests. Fire resistance ratings can be accomplished with the application of fire resistive materials (fireproofing) to those assemblies.  Traditionally we have seen cementitious inorganic fireproofing formulations such as Carboline's Pyrocrete products.   But, at times this product was difficult to apply and required professional contractors to apply.

But enter the new Contego Intumescent Latex (thin film) Passive Fire Barrier Paints.  Contego intumescent latex passive fire barrier paint is awater-based, thin film, one-component latex fire barrier coating containing 56.2% solids, by weight, is designed to protect various substrates by developing a thick char barrier (intumescent layer) when exposed to high temperatures or flame. It is a very affordable and easily applied (by brush, roller, or sprayer) product with the following features and benefits:

· Water based paint with no VOC's.
· Is not classified as a hazardous material.
· Will clean up with soap and water.
· Is an optional solution to Carboline's Pyrocrete for fire-proofing.
· Can provide a 2-hour fire protection rating on LPG installations (re: vertical tank legs) with sufficient coats.
· Available in 1 or 5 gallon containers.

Contego PaintGEC sells Contego Intumescent Latex (thin film) Passive Fire Barrier Paints in one (1) and five (5) gallon sizes.

 "TECH Topic"

Proper Piping-Away a Regulator Vent

In a recent industry magazine advertisement; a claim is that the piping material complies with the 2011 edition of NFPA 58. While most manufacturers do not dispute this claim, please be aware of some potential issues that may result if that system is used to pipe away RegO LV4403B and LV5503B series second stage regulators.

The pipe away threaded connector must be ¾" FNPT (NFPA 58 6.8.1.8 (A) (2)).

The diameter of the pipe away line must be at least ¾"; using a smaller diameter line can reduce the flow rate from the relief feature built into the LV4403B and LV5504B series second stage regulators.

Do not use the angle vent supplied with the advertised hose assembly kit in the ads at the termination of the pipe away vent line. RegO second stage regulators have a suppressor assembly built into their vent screen on the regulator. This vent/suppressor assembly is designed to control air movement into the atmospheric side of the regulator.

 Reg Vent

Without the vent/suppressor assembly installed at the end of the pipe away line, the regulator will become unstable and vibrate creating noisy operation and erratic delivery pressure. The vent screen/suppressor assembly from the regulator vent opening must be fitted into a 90 degree ¾" elbow at the termination point of the vent piping and pointed down.

When installing a pipe away system like the one recently advertised, please follow the above instructions to insure your RegO second stage regulators will perform as designed.
