NFPA 58 Rules on Cathodic Protection
Corrosion Protection System requirements for UG tanks

The 2011 edition of NFPA 58 includes several changes for the installation of cathodic protection devices, which now must be installed, tested and monitored on all new underground propane-storage containers. These new rules are found in section 6.6.6.1(A)-(O).
One aspect of the new rules require a corrosion protection system shall be installed on new installations of underground steel containers, unless technical justification is provided to the authority having jurisdiction. The corrosion protection system shall include the following: 1) a container coating complying with 5.2.1.11, 2) a cathodic protection system that consists of a sacrificial anode(s) or impressed current anode, and 3) a means to test the performance of the cathodic protection system.
Another aspect of the new rules is the cathodic protection system shall be monitored by testing and the results documented.
The sacrificial anodes shall be tested upon installation; for continued verification of the effectiveness of the system, 12-18 months after the initial test, and follow-up testing shall be performed at intervals not to exceed 36 months.
The Propane Education & Research Council has developed a training program that includes a handbook and a DVD. The video shows how to guard against corrosion of underground propane tanks and black iron or steel piping.

GEC offers marketers a number of optional testing kits and replacement maintenance products for use in the installation, testing, and maintenance of underground tank installations.
GEC also offers FREE training on how to measure tank-to-soil cathodic protection potentials on propane tanks. Contact your sales representative or branch for more information on cathodic protection products, test kits, and training.

COPPER SULFATE CRYSTALS & ELECTRODES

Note: Under average conditions, an electrode should be emptied and cleaned out every two or three months. However, if the electrode is allowed to remain in prolonged contact with low resistivity soil or water, more frequent rejuvenation may be desirable. For consistent results, manufacturers recommend using the highest purity CuSo4 Crystal's possible.
Precautions:
STORAGE: CuSo4 will deteriorate over time. Electrodes, which are purchased in bulk and stored for later use, should always be checked before placing into service. Copper rods can become tarnished or pitted by deteriorating CuSo4 and the CuSo4 will become unusable. The copper in this condition will become contaminated, which will cause inaccurate readings. CuSo4 should have a rich, deep blue color. If the crystals appear to have become whitened or have the appearance of being dehydrated, discard in a safe manner and replace with fresh. Do not store the electrodes in a damp atmosphere. Some types of fungus or mold can contaminate the ceramic plug assemblies. Always rotate your stock using the "FIFO" (First In, First Out) method.
Common Source of Error: The voltmeter used in conjunction with reference electrodes should be of sufficiently high impedance (10 megohms or greater) so that contact resistance, which can occur between electrode and soil, does not affect readings. When taking readings, the ceramic plug must come in contact with soil. Vegetation such as grass should be moved out of the way. Grass or other items will add resistance and result in inaccurate readings. Reference electrodes are designed to be durable, but over time, the ceramic plug assembly will become contaminated by foreign materials and become worn or cracked. At this point, the replacement of the ceramic plug assembly is highly recommended. If the CuSo4 mixture within the electrode becomes cloudy white, reverse osmosis has occurred and rejuvenation is recommended.
GEC sells replacement CuSo4 copper sulfate crystals (PN 16906, .75 lbs) for half cells. And, replacement electrode half cells (PN RE-5C). |

"What's NOT Wrong" with this Picture?

This is at a Dispenser location.
NFPA 58, Section 6.24.3.14 states an identified and accessible switch or circuit breaker shall be installed at a location not less than 20 ft or more than 100 ft from the dispensing device(s) to shut off the power in the event of a fire, accident, or other emergency.
Section 6.24.3.15 states the markings for the switches or breakers shall be visible at the point of transfer.
Both requirements are in addition to the requirements of section 6.24.3.9, stating an identified and accessible remote emergency shutoff device for either the internal valve or the emergency shutoff valve required by section 6.24.3.8 (1) or (2) shall be installed not less than 3 ft or more than 100 ft from the liquid transfer point.

Knock-off refrigeration fitting RV-L fittings LDS2000/RV fittings |
Dear Valued Customer, it has come to the attention at Presto Tap that there are some "knock offs" or similar products being distributed and in some cases being referred to as the Presto Tap model RV-L regulator valve.
Currently Presto Tap is unsure of the components or origin of these knock off fittings and their compatibility to LP Gas. Some of these "knock offs" are designed to be soldered onto tubing in refrigeration systems as well as having 1/8" Male MNPT threads indicating they are designed for use with Freon instead of propane gas.
The official Presto Tap Model RV-L is packaged in plastic bags in quantities of 50 units with usage and installation instructions and bears the company logo along with the model number RV-L. Also the cap component is a brass hex cap containing a crushable copper seal. This product is designed to be installed at locations where pressure has been reduced from tank pressure.
The Patented and UL Listed Presto Tap Model LDS2000/RV is legal installed at any point in the LP Gas System including tank pressure.
Presto Tap is a registered trademark of Presto Tap LLC and should in no way be used in the description or marketing of products other than genuine Presto Tap products. If you have any questions please visit our web site at www.presto-tap.com.
GEC is a distributor of Presto-Tap fittings, test gauges, and products as well as the RegO Ready-To-Go Valves featuring Presto-Tap fittings.

Conversion of Cylinder Dispensers for Autogas Use
Do you have a traditional cylinder filling dispenser that won't produce enough differential pressure to fill an autogas (motor fuel) tank on a vehicle? If you are unaware; new OEM and after-market vehicle conversions that are utilizing liquid injection, require pumps to overcome higher than normal differential pressures in the tanks. Both Corken and Blackmer are manufacturing special high differential pressure (HDP) pumps specifically for the autogas and motor fuel refueling market.
GEC offers HDP pumps for use in autogas dispensing applications. For many of you, who already have made an investment in cylinder dispensing equipment, you can economically upgrade your cylinder dispensing station to HDP autogas dispensing by changing your traditional cylinder pump for a HDP pump product. Additionally, GEC offers a pump/motor skid to be mounted between the dispenser and tank to mount the larger HDP pump if it will not fit inside the exisiting cylinder dispenser cabinet.
In addition to upgrading the pump and bypass valve for autogas applications GEC offers the GasGuard GG20 dispenser nozzle and a flush mount nozzle holster to attach to your existing cabinet for a dedicated autogas dispenser hose. The holster and nozzle incorporates a means for locking the valve in the holster when unattended. |
