"Did You Know?"
REGULATIONS: NFPA 58 2011 edition Get ready, a new round of regulatory changes is coming that will affect the way you do business. In the 2011 edition of NFPA 58 one new rule (6.9.3.16) will require underground metallic piping, tubing, or both that convey LP-Gas from a gas storage container shall require dielectric fittings at the building to electrically isolate it from the aboveground portion of the fixed piping system that enters the building. The dielectric fittings shall be installed above ground and outdoors. An alternative to utilization of dielectric unions in tank installations is to utilize non-metallic underground piping. Polyethylene (PE) pipe and fittings that meet ASTM D2513 standard specifications can be used in lieu of copper or steel pipe and do not require the use of dielectric unions at the building. GEC sells dielectric unions for meeting this regulation and for use to isolate underground tanks from metallic underground piping. We also carry a full line of PE pipe, fittings, couplings, risers, and accessories for various gas load size requirements. If you need help sizing PE piping for extraordinary loads, contact one of our branches, we can run engineering analysis calculations for various gas load requirements, varying pressure requirements and pressure drops.

Weights & Measures rules on Discharge Lines/Valves on Dispensers
The National Institute of Standards and Technology weights & measures regulations in Handbook 44, Section 3.32 have rules on the design of discharge lines and discharge line valves for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and Anhydrous Ammonia Liquid-Measuring Devices; such as dispensers. Those rules prohibit having a cylinder filling hose and a motor fueling hose operational simultaneously. Section 3 "Design of Discharge Lines and Discharge Line Valves" in S.3.1 "Diversion of Measured Liquid" states, "No means shall be provided by which any measured liquid can be diverted from the measuring chamber of the meter or its discharge line. Two or more delivery outlets may be installed only if automatic means are provided to ensure that:
(a) liquid can flow from only one outlet at a time, and
(b) the direction of flow for which the mechanism may be set at any time is clearly and conspicuously indicated."
This rule demonstrates the need for a three-way valve at the meter discharge for dispensers that have cylinder hoses and motor fuel hoses downstream of the meter.
* GEC stocks three-way ball valves for dispenser applications. |

"What's Wrong" with this Picture?
The answer is, the cover is damaged and the reinforcement is exposed. Section 7.2.4 of the 2008 edition of NFPA 58 tells us the following: 7.2.4.1 Hose assemblies shall be observed for leakage or for damage that could impair their integrity before each use. 7.2.4.2 These hose assemblies shall be inspected at least annually. 7.2.4.3 Inspection of pressurized hose assemblies shall include the following: (1) Damage to outer cover that exposes reinforcement. (2) Kinked or flatten hose. (3) Soft spots or bulges in hose. (4) Couplings that have slipped on the hose, are damaged, have missing parts, or have loose bolts. (5) Leakage other than permeability leakage. 7.2.4.4 Hose assemblies shall be replaced, repaired or continued in service based on the results of this inspection. 7.2.4.5 Leaking or damaged hose shall be immediately repaired or removed from service. In this case the outer cover is weathered to the point it is pealing or has exposed the reinforcement braiding of the hose. This hose should have been taken out of service before getting this bad. Section 7.2.4.1 states marketers should observe the hose for issues before each use and section 7.2.4.5 states damaged hose shall be immediately repaired or removed from service. And this does not mean a "duck tape" type of repair. It is up to the employees to conduct daily inspections and report problems like these before accidents can happen.
* GEC sells SmartHose Technologies safety hose and traditional hose assemblies in various sizes and lengths. SmartHose Technologies passive shutdown safety hoses are the industry's safest LPG hose. They incorporate 316SS stainless steel ends which are reusuable, do not require any maintenance, are available for both transports or facility applications, and US-DOT Special Permits have been issued to provide relaxed attendance requirements for railcar offloading and cargo tank motor vehicles. To protect your hose investment use Pigstail, a protective wrap used to extend the life of your hose. It is manufactured with 100% virgin polyethylene, is strong, flexible and durable with excellent memory and abrasion resistance incorporating smooth edges that won't cut the user during installation. We stock Pigstail in 11' transfer hose lengths, bulk 66' boxes, or cut to length as needed. |
