 2011 Employment Expo

Date: Thursday, May 19, 2011

Revolving around a vibrant Career Fair, the Employment Expo will be a celebration of employment and career opportunities for people with disabilities in our community. Mark your calendars and watch for more details to be released soon.

 Scent-Free Event 

For those with environmental sensitivities, being in a "scent-free" area is not only a necessity, but a right protected by the Canadian Human Rights Act.

 

The Employment Expo will be a scent-free environment. We ask all attendees to respect this very important accommodation.

 

Read the information provided by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. You can also read the policy by the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

May 26 - 28, 2011: Six Steps to Success Conference "Where Disability Works" in Whitehorse, Yukon. Bringing together employers, government agencies, service providers and distinguished experts in the field of disability and employment to share & explore best practices. Registration is now open!

 

May 29 - Jun 4, 2011: Manitoba Access Awareness Week
 

Jun 7 - 9, 2011: Conference - Canadian Association for Supported Employment, Halifax, Nova Scotia. This conference will bring together service providers, advocates and educators to share tools, resources and innovative practices in supported employment.

 

 Employment Opportunity

Job Opportunities Now Open for Supervisors and Enumerators in the 2011 Census

 

This can be a great opportunity for folks to get some work experience and some money in their pockets.

 

The 2011 Census is staffing 35,000 jobs across Canada. Applicants must be over 18 years old and able to commit to at least 20 hours per week including evenings, weekends and holidays, apply now. Rates of pay ($14.72 to $18.04 an hour) vary by assignment. The work period is early March to the end of July 2011, depending on assignment.

 Scholarship Opportunity

Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities -for rising juniors, seniors and graduate students who are pursuing degrees in computer science, computer engineering or a closely related field as a full time student in 2011-2012 in the U.S. and Canada. $10,000 USD or $5,000 CAD scholarship (based on tuition costs) and be invited to attend the annual Google Scholars retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA in 2011. Deadline: February 6, 2011.

 

 Discussion Paper

A new discussion paper by the Caledon Institute for Social Policy advocates "A Basic Income Plan for Canadians with Severe Disabilities". Released in November of 2010, in large part it responds to Canadians with severe disabilities having a "tenuous relationship to the labour force." It supports this position with some convincing statistics.

 

 Call to Action - Deadline Jan 31/11
Groundbreaking legislation that will enhance and enforce human rights and accessibility for Manitobans with disabilities is being entertained by the current government. They are awaiting community response to a Discussion Paper that they have distributed. You are invited to play a role in this historic effort. Here are three steps you can take NOW to affirm your support:

 

         Complete an action card calling on Premier Selinger to table landmark legislation now.

         Review the province's Discussion Paper that is posted on the Disabilities Issues Office website

          Give the province your feedback on the discussion paper. Share your thoughts with the Province by email,  or  provide feedback online.
