The "Filling Station" Pump is Born!

 September 5th, 1885

Sylnaus F. (Freelove) Bowser was the inventor of the modern gas pump design. His first pump was designed to safely dispense fuels, such as kerosene and the light combustible prodold pumpucts of petroleum. The pump used a wooden plunger, an upright faucet and marble valves to dispense the fuel; it held 42 gallons of product. Bowser sold his first pump to a grocery store in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Realizing the huge success of the pump, Bowser patents his invention and forms the S.F. Bowser Company. As the automobiles popularity grows, so does the S.F. Bowser Company. By 1905, the same year the first gas station was built, the S.F. Bowser "Self-Measuring Gasoline Storage Pump" is soon recognized by motorists as a "filling station".

This Photo from the Smithsonian Collection shows the original 1916 S.F. Bowser Gasoline Pump. The hand-stroke lever suction pump used a rack and pinion system, which included a hose attachment for dispensing fuel directly into vehicles and a dial the showed the customer how much fuel was pumped.
