No April Fool's
April 20, 1893 - Edward Doheny, a struggling prospector and his mining partner strike (black) gold when they drill into the tar seeps between Colton Avenue and Beverley Boulevard in Los Angeles. The discovery sets off California's first oil boom by producing about 45 barrels per day. By 1895, 80 wells in the Los Angeles City field were producing nearly 750,000 barrels - over half of the 1.2 millon being produced in the entire state of California! By 1897 over 500 wells were pumping and sadly, over-supply causes the price of oil to drop to 25 cents a barrel. That's right, 25 cents a barrel! |

RETAIL ROUND UP - Incentive Programs
Consumers seek to capitalize on the money they spend and want the most out of their purchase; especially in a tough economy. Now more than ever, retailers need to find creative ways to sustain their business and keep the customer coming back. Incentive programs have become a standard marketing tool for c-store retailers. Not only do they create loyalty and encourage customers to spend more, but they also attract new customers.
According to the NDP Group/Motor Fuels Index, the percentage of consumers who cited rebate/discount/rewards programs as the #1 reason why they choose to fuel their vehicles at a particular station is on the rise. In fact, these types of programs actually surpassed "brand preference" as the reason for where consumers choose to fuel up. There are many types of programs retailers can implement. Whether it's a sustained discount for a period of time, awarding points that can be redeemed for tangible items, or offering discounts on store items, no matter how you slice it, research proves that these programs work!
