Breakout Session

Topic Change

2010 Cooking Session

The Tapestry breakout sessions are put together with care to provide a variety of educational and fun experiences from which to choose. We appreciate that you expect high-quality presentations. Therefore, we know that you will understand that unforeseen technical difficulties have required the Food or Chemistry - You Be the Judge session to be changed. Have no fear though, the Mike & Mike show will go on-the cooking topic has just been changed to Discovering Duck!

Join Mike Packnett, president and CEO of Parkview Health, and Michael Wartell, IPFW chancellor, as they unfold the secrets to preparing Peking (now known as Beijing) Duck. An excellent low-fat source of protein and iron, duck in its many forms can be the centerpiece of any meal. Mike & Mike will share their usual blend of humor and cooking artistry to make this an unforgettable session. Please contact the Tapestry office by April 11 at tapestry@ipfw.edu or 260 481-6854 if you would like to switch your session selections based on this change.

Spring has sprung!

Have you noticed the new buds on the plants, the grass turning green, the birds singing, and the bright colors popping out of your wardrobe? After what felt like one continuous snow-day of a winter, spring is finally here! If you are like many Fort Wayne residents, you will be heading off to warmer weather in the next week or two. Before you go, please remember to send in your Tapestry registration or register on-line. The breakout sessions are filling fast, and the first phase of registration ends Monday, April 11.  From April 12 -20 you may still register with an additional $10 donation to the Tapestry Scholarship Account.

So, gather your friends and plan a day for you at Tapestry April 29.  Remember that Table Leaders who organize a reserved table for 10 will receive a complimentary copy of Molly Ringwald's book "Getting the Pretty Back:Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick."  It will be ready for you to have signed by Molly herself at Tapestry!

Happy travels to those heading out and enjoy the peace and quiet for those staying in the Fort!

Warmly,

Ruth Stone

The Perfect Gift

brochure

Mother's Day, May 8, is right around the corner. As women, we have a special bond with our mothers. I know in my case, there are no secrets between my mother and me. I am an open book to her. As hard as I may try to hide something (good or bad) from her, it is impossible. We know each other too well. So when I think about what to get my mother for Mother's Day, I struggle. Sure I could get her a pretty new spring top or flowers for her garden, but that's not really what she wants. In our busy lives, time together is what she values most.

If you are a mother with young children, your husband will undoubtedly want to fill your Mother's Day with family time. While both of my kids are in high school now, they were young once. I remember wondering during one particularly trying Mother's Day brunch why no one understood that the one thing a mother of young children wants on Mother's Day is a day away from the reason for which she is a mother - the children. Now that experience has made me wiser, I realize that it is up to us to create our "Mother's Day" and give ourselves a day away.

Tapestry is just that - a day away. Invite your mom or your mom friends to enjoy time with other women.  Our lives are busy; don't forget to take time for yourself and enjoy your own secret "Mother's Day."

What Not to Pack

 Vacation

Whether you are flying or driving for a long weekend or week at the beach, the over packing trap is hard to avoid and comes with consequences. Straining your back while trying to shove a 50-pound bag into your compact car can be embarrassing. Paying luggage fees ranging from $15 to $25 per bag per person can be painful. Therefore, follow these tips to make traveling what it should be ... fun!

  • Don't pack more shoes than days you will be away. Consider bringing outfits that require the same color of shoe. Then, you can mix and match outfits with shoes of different styles without bringing your complete shoe collection.
  • Don't pack your entire beauty routine. If your face-washing regimen or daily hair taming is a bit like a science experiment, relax for a week and enjoy the simplicity of fewer products and more free time.
  • Don't pack what the hotel provides. This includes hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner, and towels.  Little Susie will survive a week without her favorite glitter beach towel.
  • Don't pack your fine jewelry. Your grandmother's pearl necklace or diamond watch does not belong in foreign lands. No one wants to spend their vacation wedging things in and out of the hotel safe. Keep your jewelry selection simple and easily replaceable.
  • Don't pack to be prepared for every occasion. Make a quick guess as to what clothing you will need for the trip and stop. Resist the "what if" packing that happens when you see an extra inch of packing space.  "What if I spill something on my white pants, what if it's colder than I expect, what if it's raining, what if..."  Unless you are going to a deserted island, there is probably a superstore within 10 miles of your destination. If you are in a foreign country, consider a last-minute clothing emergency as a chance to buy a souvenir that you can show off at home.
