If Thomas Jefferson were alive today, he would most likely be seen as a right wing, intolerant, closed-minded, out of touch nut! He probably would be a Tea Party hero and liberal adversary. He probably would receive the applause of Glenn Beck and the criticism of Keith Olberman. This one thing is certain; he would prove to be entertaining to watch as a guest on The View. Oh, if Jefferson were alive today!
In light of the mid-term elections on Tuesday, I found these quotations by Jefferson quite interesting. Use them as you think appropriate:
"It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world."
"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government has grown out of too much government."
"To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."
"And I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swingling futurity on a large scale."
"The only foundation for useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion."
We only have two days until the election. I hope that you will exercise your freedom to vote. I hope that you are praying. I hope that you personally are repenting of your sins and seeking God like never before. Remember, God is waiting for you and our country needs you.
Special Note: If you are in the Mobile, Alabama area, I would like to personally invite you to our "We the People" rally being held Tuesday, November 2 at 12:23pm in Bienville Square downtown. This rally will be a celebration of our freedom to vote and an opportunity to pray for our country as God's people. The program will be a mix of God and country and will conclude by 1:00pm. I hope you will come and please bring someone with you.
Have a good Sunday! |

Today's Scripture
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind."
James 1:5-6 |

Today's Prayer
Presidential Prayer For Peace, dated March 4, 1805.
"Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with Thy spirit wisdom those whom in Thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
Today's prayer was submitted by: Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
Today's commentary was written by: Dr. Joe Savage, director, University of Mobile Center for Leadership and the twelve23 movement. |
