Ask a Captain

Can I still go on the trip if I don't want to fish?

Sure! If you want to come on the trip but don't want to fish, you may purchase a Rider extra at a reduced price. Please keep in mind that if you do choose to purchase a Rider extra, you will not be allowed to fish for the duration of the trip! We also recommend attending the daytime trips instead so you can benefit from the gorgeous scenery during the daylight.

What happens if I don't catch any fish?

We can only guarantee great fishing, not catching. Our crew will do everything we can to put you where the fish are, but we can not control what does or does not bite the hook. If you don't catch anything, please come back for another trip to try again!

What are the limits on the fish that I catch?

There are legal limits on both fish size and quantity in the state of Florida depending upon the species. Your crew will keep you informed during the trip of any regulations - however, legal quantity limits are high enough that you will most likely be able to keep everything you catch that's of legal size!

Can I eat the fish I catch?

Of course! Our crew is always happy to clean and fillet your fish for you. Our on-site restaurant The Hungry Tarpon will be happy to cook your catch for you. Of course our mates work for tips, so please keep that in mind!

Hello from Steve in the Booth

As you all know summer is coming to a close and we want to thank all of you who fed our fish, snorkeled on the Happy Cat or fished on the Captain Michael. But, don't forget we are not just a summer destination spot. The next 4 months are some of the most pleasant times in the keys.

The night fishing really heats up during our "slow season," we don'tSteve mean that the fishing gets slow but the number of anglers is lower due to less people vacationing at that time of the year. When we have a light load the captain can utilize different techniques on certain spots. Also, with tropical disturbances moving large schools of baitfish into our area the snapper fishing gets really hot.

We have started a Robbie's of Islamorada Jr. Angler page on face book and invite all of you to please post pictures to that page of your Jr. Anglers with the fish that they have caught. Speaking of Jr. Anglers we will be hosting our Jr. Angler Fishing Tournament the 1st Sunday in October this year. That's October 7th, All current and former Jr. Anglers are eligible to enter we will have a great time and have winners for several different categories.

The Happy cat snorkel boat is still running strong 3 times a day at 9am, noon, and 3 pm; the reviews we are getting from the reef are amazing. The fish all have become accustomed to the sound of our boat and swarm to it as if called by a dinner bell.

With the cold weather approaching now is a great time to plan that Sailfish charter of a lifetime on the Islamorada lady II. We will really be hitting those sails hard starting in early November and continuing thru May. Call the booth to schedule your date and ask about some really good deals that you can get from several local hotels.

We would also like to thank all of our facebook fans who follow us and participate in my Friday Fun Day Contests we have fans from all over the world check us out at http://www.facebook.com/feedthetarpon

Off shore we are still catching a lot of serious dolphin and Tuna so if you still need to get your fishing jones scratched call us at 305-664-8070 and we will put you on some fish.

Thanks again,

Steve in the booth

From the Waters

The mangrove snapper are still biting at night. It's coming to the end of the spawn but we still catching our share. The mangrove should continue to be here until the next full moon. The yellowtailYellowtail Snapper bite has picked up with flags and nice pound and a halfers. The flags should be showing up soon.

There are muttons on the deeper structure and when conditions are right we are catching them. Don't be surprised to catch a Cubera on those same spots.

Congratulations to Captain Joe Saba with his crushing victory in the IFC Junior angler dolphin tournament.

The night fishing should remain productive thru the end of September so come on down and wet a line.

Junior Angler of the Month

Holden and Cooper Scully our junior anglers of the month fished Jr. Anglers of Augustthis year with 18 Junior Anglers 18 years old and younger in the 5th Annual Islamorada Fishing Clubs Junior Dolphin Tournament.   4 year old Holden Scully from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida angled his way into the winners circle with the largest fish of the tournament and first place team.

Holden was fishing with his brother Cooper aboard the Dirty Boat out of Robbie's Marina.  Captain Joe Saba put the Scully's on the tournaments biggest fish, a 31.9 pounder early in the day winning Holden the largest fish in the Schoolie Division (age 0-6) and a nice trophy sponsored by Mercedes Benz of Cutler Bay.

Holden was able to receive for lifting and holding the rod up by mate Galon Johnson as he also captured the tournament's Jr. Anglers of Augustsecond
largest fish at 25.6 pounds.  His brother Cooper, age 7, fought another nice Dolphin but the fish made a run under the boat and the line was cut off on the propellers.  Cooper did weigh in the team's third fish a nice 9.5 pound Dolphin.

The teams combined weight of three fish totaled an impressive 67.0 pounds for a first place victory.

The History of Robbie's

"Amazing," "breathtaking" and "impressive" are words we often hear from first-time visitors to the end of our dock. What they're referring to is the school of 50 to 100 tarpon that come here dailyHistoric Robbies and linger for hours. Occasionally, a tarpon actually rises up from the water in a powerful flash of silver and green to meet the fish as it leaves your hand. It's a sight to behold! Maybe the "Silver Kings" just come here to see the humans, but toss a baitfish among them and the water churns as these monsters and the resident pelicans vie for the snack, causing quite a spectacle.

Robbie and his wife Mona started feeding Scarface 18 years ago. Scarface appeared floundering in the shallow waters near the dock; Robbie saw the struggling tarpon and, thinking it had swum too shallow and gotten stuck on the bank, went out into the water to free it. He lifted the fish and saw that the right side of its jaw was tarpontorn open. Hoping to revive the tarpon, Robbie placed it in the oxygen-rich shrimp tank and called old Doc Roach. The doctor showed up with his wife's mattress needles and some twine, and Scarface became the first known tarpon with stitches. After several days of force-feeding, Scarface showed good recovery and weight gain; six months later he was released into the waters off the dock. Afterwards, Scarface continued to frequent the docks; sometimes bringing a friend. Soon more and more of the fish began to appear.  Today, the tradition continues, with visitors from all across the world coming to marvel at the spectacle and offer these magnificent creatures a snack.
