Ask a Captain

Q. Can I still go on the trip if I don't want to fish?

A. Sure! If you want to come on the trip but don't want to fish, you may purchase a Rider extra at a reduced price. Please keep in mind that if you do choose to purchase a Rider extra, you will not be allowed to fish for the duration of the trip! We also recommend attending the daytime trips instead so you can benefit from the gorgeous scenery during the daylight.

Q. What happens if I don't catch any fish?

A. We can only guarantee great fishing, not catching. Our crew will do everything we can to put you where the fish are, but we can not control what does or does not bite the hook. If you don't catch anything, please come back for another trip to try again!

Q. What are the limits on the fish that I catch?

A. There are legal limits on both fish size and quantity in the state of Florida depending upon the species. Your crew will keep you informed during the trip of any regulations - however, legal quantity limits are high enough that you will most likely be able to keep everything you catch that's of legal size!

Q. Can I eat the fish I catch?

A. Of course! Our crew is always happy to clean and fillet your fish for you. Our on-site restaurant The Hungry Tarpon will be happy to cook your catch for you. Of course our mates work for tips, so please keep that in mind!

May Fishing Report and

Predictions for June

Wow! Are the yellowtails ever here!  Mainly at night, but the bite is out of this world!  In the patch reefs we are catching them up to a pound and a half, but out on the wrecks we are getting them up to 4 pounds on a consistent basis.  And to make matters even better underneath the tails on the bottom are lane snappers, muttons and porgies.  Don't worry too much about the bait for the tails.  It's Yellowtail Snappermore about the tackle you fish with.  You want a spinning rod with 10 to 20 pound test MONO on it and a small jig from 1/32 ounce to 1/8th ounce.  That's it, you don't need anything more or less than that.

The mutton bite is on too. On a recent private night charter we came up with 9 muttons up to 16 pounds.  We fished nothing but deep wrecks with fresh and live bait.  It was a lot of fun and we would love to schedule a trip like that for you!

Groupers have been a bit slow.  Now that the water is warming up they are getting pretty hard to come by.

The hot scene offshore is dolphin.  They are biting like crazy everywhere outside of 300 feet of water.  I haven't seen the Islamorada Lady come in with a catch that was anything less than awesome in weeks!  They have mainly been catching dolphin, but tunas and wahoos have made their way into the box also.

Tarpon is also red hot.  The charter boats out of Robbie's are getting them on a nightly basis.

Steve

So that's the report from the last week or so... As for predictions, I would expect to see the tails and muttons to bite like crazy for the next couple months.   The mangroves will start really chewing at night after the full moon in June and  July, while the dolphin will remain hot until late August.  If you are coming to fish the Capt. Michael party boat make sure you bring your light spinning gear for the yellowtails!

From the Waters

Night fishing on the Capt. Michael has been really good for the month of May.  When the conditions were right we are able to fish wrecks and bridge rubble in depths of 90 to 100 feet of water for Flag Yellowtail, Lane Snapper, Almaco Jacks and even a 20 muttonCubera snapper.

When it's a little rough we fish patches for nice Mangroves ranging from 1 - 4 lbs, keeper Yellowtails and Red Groupers.  The Pilchards have been thick so we have been able to get live bait for two 12 lb Muttons on the patches as well.  As we move on to the summer month's night fishing is only going to get better and we are all looking forward to the Mangrove spawning.

Dolphin fishing remains good, lots of larger school size fish are moving through.  We have been averaging 1 or 2 larger fish as well.  However, the "slammer dolphin" has been slow to show, but that will change any day.

There has been a sprinkling of white and blue marlin and daytime dropping for Swordfish has been good.

Junior Angler of the Month

Let me introduce you to 8 yr old Josh Downtain from Raleigh North Carolina, and his grandfather Doug Davis of Johnson City Tennessee.  Josh has become an avid fisherman with the help of his grandfather. He went offshore twice in the past week on our 47'junior angler of june Hatteras The Islamorada lady II and caught 10 Mahi Mahi all by himself. He is pictured above with the largest of the catch. That alone would be a great trip for me but that's not all.

On Thursday he went tarpon fishing with Captain Chris King on his 21' mako. Josh caught nurse sharks, and a tarpon bigger than he is!!!!

Josh and his grandfather fish together often and he has caught redfish, brook trout, and red and black drum.  He said the favorite thing about fishing in the Florida Keys is "seeing all the really big fish". His favorite fishing of the trip was going offshore.

"Islamorada Lady II with Capt. Ron and His Mate"

Reviewed May 26, 2011 - NEW

To get an early start on the day requires a good night sleep. We arrived at Robbie's of Islamorada to our charter with the Islamorada Lady II with her Captain Ron and First Mate Kevin. Our party consisted of two other couples that totaled six. Leaving port at 7am, we had our fully rigged lines in the water by 8:00 or 8:30. The morning was absolutely beautiful with the rising sun and cool

breeze. Shortly there after we were reeling in Mahi-Mahi at a

steady pace for about an hour before the school moved and we set chase. Within a short time, the reels snapped to, as the school was found for another furious hour of controlled chaos. The Mate Kevin kept the hooks baited and Captain Ron kept us on course. Our trip was fruitful and the meals aplenty. The catch was quite bountiful.

The skill and speed at which the team of the Islamorada Lady II kept our party in the thick of the sport is unsurpassed. The crews pride and professionalism is a great tribute to the legend of the Florida Keys, and I highly recommend this team and the staff at Robbie's of Islamorada as a focal point of your Florida Keys Vacation.

Captain Izzy Dontatiello

Hi Izzy. Just wanted to thank you for the wonderful tarpon fishing Izzytrip on May 20th. That is the biggest tarpon, actually the biggest fish of any species I ever caught. It was the catch of a lifetime. As usual, you were able to hook us up with some outstanding fishing. Can't wait to get back soon and do it again. Mike and Teresa Grable, Yukon Oklahoma. Your Lobster Dinner Awaits

Fresh Florida lobsters caught yourself taste so much better than the ones caught in the grocery isle at the Winn Dixie. Mini season is coming and with it the chance to enjoy one of my favorite bounties of the Florida Keys waters Florida lobsters. Lobster Mini Season Dates this year July 27, 28.

Lobster season in the Florida Keys is a ritual for many people. joe with lobsterSummertime means warm water and warm water means diving for bugs.

People come from all over the country to partake in this yearly event. The majority come from Florida. This is a two-day event. It begins one hour before sunrise and ends one hour after sunset each of the two days. No night diving. Don't forget to get your stamp on the salt water fishing license. This stamp will allow you to harvest 6 of these sweet crustaceans a day.

The equipment you'll need for this is a dive flag, net, tickle stick, measuring device, a catch bag and a real tough pair of gloves. It goes without saying you'll need a mask, fins and snorkel. Now some folks do scuba dive for these bugs, but come on it's so easy to catch them, that's cheating.

Here are the boat rentals we offer. A security deposit can reserve one of these boats for you.  Gas and oil is in addition to the rental rate.
