Ask a Captain

Q. Why should I book a private charter?

A. A private charter gives you more of a personalized experience with the individual attention needed to put you on the fish of a lifetime. You will be provided with a captain and a mate who are there to give you the extra attention you desire. Ultimately you can choose the destination/species of fish that you would like to pursue because a private charter is all about you. We always recommend that you consult with the captain as it is his job to know where to fish are and what species will provide the best opportunities for you and your group. The Mate on the boat is there to help you with anything that you need while fishing from baiting the hooks, hooking up a great catch and filleting your catch so you are ready for dinner.

Q. Which is better, a half day or a full day?

A. We are successful on both half day and full day charters. The half day trips are usually patch reef trips which provides a short ride out to the reef. With so many species available on the reef, yellowtail snappers, hogfish, mackerel, mangrove snapper these trips are rod bending and lots of fun. Full day trips can take you farther offshore into the deep blue water of the Gulf Stream. Out there the big game fish lurk such as Mahi Mahi, Black fin tunas, Wahoo and much more can be caught.

Q. How much is a full day offshore?

A. Prices vary depending on the size of the boat that you are chartering. Our 47' Hatteras the Islamorada lady II is $1050 for a full 8 hours of fishing. This boat comes with a captain and a first mate that are there to make sure that you have the trip of a lifetime. This boat has an air conditioned cabin, a full head and refrigerator to keep your lunch and beverages cold. The charter can also be split amongst 2-3 parties to help share the expenses.

Why Kids Need Fishing

Published: May 18, 2001

by: Richard Louv

Now and then, a mom or dad (or other relative) will kind of sidle up to me and look at the ceiling or at their fingernails. They clear their throat, and say something like: "Uh, Rich, my kid wants to go fishing..." Pause. "And, well, to tell you the truth..." This is when they make eye contact, finally. "...I don't know the first thing about fishing."

Maybe they fished long ago with a father or uncle, a mother or aunt. Or maybe no adult ever took them fishing. "So how do you go about it?" they ask. "Do you rent a boat? Do you get lessons?" And so on.

The primary question, however, is why?

For several years, I've been asking people that question while travelling around the country to research "Fly-Fishing for Sharks: An Angler's Journey Across America," a book about our relationship with naturespecifically, with fish. I've heard countless stories about how fishing serves as a glue that binds the generationsthat fishing is not about catching fish. It's about time and memory. And water.

Fishing Memories and History
Take Conway Bowman, for instance. Conway is a thirty-something former grunge rocker who, after years of separation from nature, returned to his childhood obsession: fishing. He now fly-fishes off the San Diego coast
for sharks. His earliest memories are associated with fishing.

"I remember my father, this big man walking into the kitchen with albacore as long as his leg," says Conway. "I'd watch the way he cleaned the fish with authority. I'd sit on the floor and just look at him. He'd get me up to go fishing when it was still dark. I remember his Ford Falcon, and his hat, and his red checkered jacket, and his fishing boots. I still have those boots. They're in my closet now."

There's just something about fishingsomething that goes way beyond the impulse to hunt, gather, or order smoked salmon.

Somewhere along the line of human history, fishing became more than a survival tool. Much more. Egyptian hieroglyphs portrayed fishers using short rods and lines and attired in the style of the noblemen, indicating that angling was a diversion for the wealthy. Plutarch wrote of a fishing match between Antony and Cleopatra - the first trophy tournament? And in England in 1486, a nun named Dame Juliana Berners wrote the first essay on sport fishing.

So don't let anyone tell you that fishing is just for boys.

"I almost hate to call it fishing," says Margot Page, who lives in Vermont and calls herself a "fishermom." A well-known fly-fisher, she's passing the fishing tradition on to her daughter. "I'd rather call it water treatment. Yes, it's about the line and these wild flashes of light you see in the stream, but it's really the water that we go to and the water we've always gone to. When you become more familiar with the creatures that inhabit water, you are drawn to see them, to connect somehow. But it starts with the water."

Life Lessons
Why is fishing important for children?

Not everyone believes it is; some people contend that fishing teaches children that hurting animals is fine. Without getting into the complicated scientific question of whether fish feel pain as we know it, I believe that anglingif adults introduce their children to itcan be an important experience.

Traditionally, fishing is one of the ways that children are introduced to naturean introduction made more important each day by a growing separation of children from nature. kidsThe kind of freedom, and access to nature, that so many of us enjoyed when we were children seems a quaint artifact in an era of kid pagers, mall rats, and Nintendo bass fishing games.

As my sons assure me, there is much that is good about today's childhood. Still, I wonder about the messages we send to our kids.

Fishing offers children a way to learn about our role as stewards of natureabout preventing pollution, about releasing fish we do not intend to eat, and eating the ones we injure. Indeed, many anglers, and I'm one of them, now prefer to release their fish, to fight another day. The fish seem to prefer it, too. Nonetheless, taking a few fish home to clean and eat can be a valuable lesson to a child who may assume that all food is born plastic-wrapped.

"We're genetically hunters and gatherers so there's a deep impulse in children to harvest fish and animals in a sensitive fashion," says David Sobel, co-director of the Antioch College Center for Environmental Education. "Fishing, when done in a respectful, spiritual fashion, provides an authentic opportunity for bonding with the natural world."

Ah, but this is all too serious. Fishing is fun, especially for kids. Some of us never outgrow it.

FISHING TIPS FOR PARENTS FROM MATTHEW LOUV (AGE 12)

1.      Fish with your kid.

2.      Let your kids go fishing, even if you don't want to take them.

3.      Let your kids buy supplies and tackle. That's half the fun of fishing.

4.      If your kids are young, take them to a place where fish are easy to catch and are small.

5.      Let kids fish as long as they want. Let them get obsessed.

6.      Let the kids go off and do their own thing. It can get to be incredibly annoying and/or frustrating if there's an adult standing over them barking orders.

7.      At least pretend to act excited when your kid catches a fish. It can quickly ruin a day of fishing if the kid feels you don't want to be there, and they're just dragging you down.

8.      If you know how to fish, don't give your kid too much unsolicited advice, although it can be helpful if the kid is young.

9.      Let your kid teach you how to fish; participate in the fishing. This can be quality bonding time.

10.  Remember that fishing and spending time with family is just as, or more important than, homework.

11.  Have fun; that's the entire point of going fishing in the first place. And whatever you do, DON'T LET YOUR KID THROW ROCKS IN THE WATER!

Matthew Louv, who is 12 years-old, started his fishing career at age 3, in the humidifier at home.

Split Charters

Sailfish, Dolphin, Tuna, Snapper, Sharks, Kingfish, Wahoo, and a slew of other species are available in the deep blue offshore waters of Islamorada. Want to go after the big one like Hemingway did in?

Our split charters typically are shared by 4-6 anglers. We are very successful in finding people who want the experience of going up to 20 miles off shore but are vacationing on a budget.  With 7 charter boats here on our dock we have people looking for splits nearly every day. The advantage for the anglers is they can get a lot more fishing for their money.

Our splits range from $188 per person to $282 per person based on 6 or 4 anglers on the Islamorada lady II. Many people develop friendships that span the years and continue to book charters together year after year.

Mahi Mahi

It is many anglers belief that Mahi Mahi is the ideal game fish to target in the keys. If you fit this category than this may be the year that you get that trophy fish, Conservation efforts and reduced pressure over the last two years should create ideal conditions for these green monsters.

Unlike sailfish, marlin, or big tuna, dolphin are fair game for the expert and 1st timer as well. Since kids need to do more fishing than catching this is a great fish for families to target.  Look thru the photos of our recent year dolphin catches and you will be impressed with the size and quantity of the fish being caught.

There is nothing more exhilarating than watching a big bull dolphin racing for your bait. It is without a doubt my favorite fish to catch. I guess because it allows us as a captain to really take part in the success of finding these fish. Already, the big dolphins have shown up off Islamorada. Just in the last few trips out of Robbie's Marina, the Islamorada Lady II has put some outstanding catches on the dock. Dolphins ranging from 20 to 40 lbs haven't been uncommon, along with some nice Wahoo caught under floating debris. The strong east winds this spring will push some of the largest dolphin of the year into our waters from the Bahamas. Just 2 years ago the largest dolphin in state history was caught off the east coast of Florida.

So, this is without a doubt the time to catch that trophy size bull dolphin. The easterly wind direction has also pushed the warm waters of the Gulf Stream close to the reef as well and a good Gulf Stream current puts the dolphin into an all-out feeding frenzy. There is nothing more exciting than watching frigate birds work a school of large slammer dolphin feeding on a school of flying fish. As we all know the flying fish are one of the dolphin's favorite foods, especially in the spring when they are found in big numbers.

All the captains out of Robbie's Marina love to catch dolphin. They are without a doubt the best charter species found. There is nothing cooler than seeing a large school of these beautiful fish in a feeding frenzy at the back of your boat. It is not uncommon for every angler to be hooked up all at the same time. I like to call it an Islamorada fire drill. They are also very acrobatic as well as one of the most colorful and beautiful fish found anywhere in the world. So, don't forget to bring your camera -- you might just catch that amazing shot.

So, hurry up and book a trip to go dolphin fishing. The booking office at Robbie's Marina will be glad to help with your accommodations. You can reach them at (305) 664-8070. I promise you, you won't be disappointed. The best part about dolphin fishing is at the end of the day because they are also great to eat.

Snorkeling

Islamorada has some of the best snorkeling in the Florida Keys.  The Happy Cat is a beautiful 43' Custom Catamaran that is capable of holding 30 passengers. With a more spacious vessel such as the Happy Cat you are offered a personalized snorkel adventure. The Happy Cat is equipped with a Captain and a Mate that are there to help you with all of your snorkeling needs. We also, provide you with all snorkel equipment and a fun time!

The Happy Cat visits two reefs, Alligator Reef and Cheeca Rocks. With Alligator Reef and Lighthouse being our most popular spot, we make two stops each trip at this reef. Our first stop is in about 20-25 feet of water with a submerged coral ledge that is great cover for the large fish that are hiding there. With all the fish living on Alligator Reef, you'll see lots of Yellowtail Snapper, Sergeant Majors, Bermuda Chubs and Barracudas.

After getting a look at the deeper side of the reef, we'll then head over to a spot right next to the Lighthouse where the water is 5-7 feet deep. With the depth being so shallow, you can get up close Happy Cat Snorkeland personal with all of the coral life and tropical fish that Alligator has to offer. While snorkeling at the lighthouse, you are welcome to go around the light and underneath it where walls and walls of fish are living. With the beautiful purple sea fans and parrot fish chomping on the coral, you feel like you are in your own personal aquarium. The waters of Alligator are crystal clear and have the Bahamas' blue feel which will make you feel like your snorkeling somewhere in the Caribbean.

Being that Robbie's marina is so close to the reef, the ride to Alligator is less than 30 minutes away so you get optimal time in the water. With 45 minutes at each site, you have time to soak in the exotic feel of our underwater world. Whether you're an experienced snorkeler or a first timer, the crew is there to help you with your every need and make sure you have a comfortable and enjoyable time.lighthouse

The Happy Cat also provides a reef rider rate for those who want to enjoy the reef from above and with the water being so clear and the fish in large amounts, you'll see it all!  After your snorkeling adventure you can rinse off the salt water with our fresh water showers on board and purchase a cold beverage or snack and enjoy the relaxing ride back to the dock. The Happy Cat's snorkeling adventures depart at 12:00pm and 3:00pm daily which put you in the water right at the best times for visibility. So no matter what trip you choose you'll have a blast! Come on down to Robbie's and board the Happy Cat for your snorkeling adventure!
