Ask a Captain

Q. When is the best time of the day to snorkel?

A. Our snorkel trips are scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. daily.  The best time to snorkel depends on you!  The sun is overhead for both trips and when the water is clear the visibility is well over 50 feet.  The bright sun and colorful fish make for a great trip.

Q. Will the island tours last all Summer?

A. The island tours will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. thru Memorial Day.  They will resume in September.

Q. What should I bring with me on a fishing/snorkel trip?

A. We sell soft drinks, beer, water and chips on all of the Robbie's vessels, however, we do allow small coolers (no glass bottles).  Also, sunscreen is a good item to bring because the sun here is extremely strong.

Meet the Captain's

Captain Samantha Zeher

Captain Samantha is a local resident with a large know
ledge base of the Islamorada area. She was born in Florida and grew up playing on the waters off of Lower Matecumbe. She learned to fish and snorkel at a young age and took a liking to the marine habitat. Samantha went on to study Marine Biology at Barry University and earned her degree in May 2009. She loves being on the water and enjoys educating people about the importance of the marine environment.

Capt. Eric Bass

Capt. Eric Bass has been fishing the waters of the Florida Keys for more than 25 years and has been a professional backcountry and flats guide for the past 10 years. He is recognized as one of the top fishing guides in the Upper Keys and is the co-host of the "Friday Night Radio Show," which is broadcast from Wahoo's Bar and Restaurant in the Whale Harbor complex found at mile marker 83 in the Village of Islamorada. The show is on the Worl
d Wide Web and can be heard on Clear Channel Broadcasting's Easy 96.9 every Friday night live from 6 to 7 p.m. The show has guests covering many different subjects with the main focus on the fishing industry in the Keys and local issues. Many celebrities while visiting Islamorada are guests on the show. They have included sports and entertainment celebrities who fish with Capt. Bass and other guides while in town.

Capt. Bass has won numerous fishing tournaments and has consistently placed in the top five positions in the tournaments he has guided anglers. He has a thorough knowledge of the techniques and skills you need to fish the waters of the Florida Keys. His ability to convey this information to the anglers he guides is done with humor and a fun approach. He has a passion for fishing fitting his motto for the sport, "We are fishing for fun!"

Capt. Brian Cone

Say Hello to Brian Cone, Captain of the Contagious, a very well-equipped 33-foot World Cat especially suited to provide smooth and comfortable travel to the best fishing spots in the ocean waters off Islamorada. Even the roughest days will be smooth on the Contagious! In the Florida Keys, Captain Brian Cone has gained a reputation as the hot hand when it comes to offshore fishing. When you fish on the Contagious you not only catch fish, but you learn a whole lot about Cone's techniques and what makes him so good as an expert at finding the fish. His passion and intensity for fishing and his easy way with customers, young and old, will surely make your day on the water a memory you will never forget!

Captain Brian was raised in the Keys exploring the ocean since he was just a little tyke. After graduating from college, Brian couldn't wait to get back to the Florida Keys and his real love - fishing! As a kid, he got to know many of the local captains who knew how to go that extra mile and come back with record-book catches. Cone learned well from them. Now, still in his early 30s, he's the one that fishermen young and old love to listen to! His early times spent on the ocean gave him a special understanding and love of the water and turned a passion into a very rewarding career.

Cone has been featured on ESPN and in many fishing publications, including Saltwater Sportsman, Center Console, and Men's Journal. Ever since he was a young teenager, Cone's name has been found at the top of the leader board at local fishing tournaments with great frequency.

Capt. Rick Cannon

Captai
n Rick Cannon was born and raised in South Florida. He has been fishing his entire life throughout Florida but mainly in the Florida Keys. His professional career has had him here at Robbie's for the past 14 years. He has guided anglers to 5 IGFA Line Class Records and has caught 6 of his own IFGA records. Captain Cannon fishes from his 26' custom built Goldline to accommodate four anglers comfortably. Captain Cannon's ideal fishing trip is to catch his customers "A tarpon of a lifetime!"

Capt. Izzy Dontatiello

Captain Izzy has been fishing Miami, Key Largo & Isl
amorada all his life, and has operated his own full-time sportfishing charter operation for more than 15 years. Whether it's trying to catch dinner, a trophy of a lifetime, or taking the family out for a day on the water. You would have made the correct decision choosing him. He knows what people expect and tries to provide it. In fact, he makes a very special effort to insure that the novice or young anglers are having fun.

Capt. Ron Howell

Captain Ron has native to South Florida and Upper Keys, he has been a capt
ain for 25 years. His earliest memories are of fishing with his brothers and sisters. He has fished the marlin tournament circuit, been a backcountry guide and won several different tournaments through the years. His heroes in his teens were not football players, but party boat captains, who day in and day out produced catches, when other captains could not. He learned from these captains and will always try his best to put his customers on fish!

Capt. Chris King

I have a passion for Tarpon Fishing because of all t
he years I have spent fishing here in the Florida Keys. Whether I was fishing offshore or in the backcountry, I found Tarpon fishing to be the most exciting fish that people liked to catch, and would remember for the rest of their lives because it is truly a fish of a lifetime! I take a lot of father and son teams, couples, or just a small group of friends Tarpon fishing and they enjoy it so much that they return year after year! Tarpon range in size from 50 lbs. to 200 lbs. It would not be a rare site to see a 200lb. Tarpon literally leaping out of the water and put on quite a show - So, don't forget to bring your camera!

Capt. Brian McCadie

I hail from Midland, Michigan, where I grew up fishing for salmon, steelhead and lake trout in Lake Huron, along with bass, pike, and walleye in island lakes and rivers. I have fished the Keys' waters professionally for six years. However, my Keys fishing career began when I was very young; my family vacationed here my whole life. My goal as a captain is to see to it that every customer on my boat catches the fish he/she is looking for, whether it's that trophy grouper or king mackerel, or a cooler full of delicious snapper.

Although there are no guarantees in fishing, I will promise you that, if you fish with me, I will work as hard as I can and give a 100-percent effort to see to it that you leave the boat with a smile on your face and fresh fillets for dinner. Best of luck wherever you may find yourself with a line in the water!

Capt. Mike Patterson
Captain Mike is originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and has been fishing in the Florida Keys for about 26 years. He's been at Robbie's for about three years and his favorite catch is snook, although he enjoys all kinds of fishing.

Capt. Skye Stanley

Captain Skye grew up in the Florida Keys. He discovered the charter boat industry at the age of 14 when he landed his first job as a second mate/swab. He foun
d himself working on some of the most renowned charter boats in the world! He was instantly hooked and has been for the last 15 years! Today he skippers his own 32' Regulator with twin outboards. The craft has a full tower for site fishing a large variety of fish, an awesome crew of 2, and a full head for your convenience. His other charter boat is a 20' Action craft all rigged and ready for some skinny water action of the back country. Captain Skye loves teaching kids to fish and is eager to meet you and your family.

Capt. Arek "Eric"Wojcik

I was born and raised in southeastern Poland where my Daddy handed me a fishing pole instead of a rattle. By the age of 12, my Dad and I had fished the Vistula River for brown trout, into the 10,000 Lakes region in northeastern Poland for perch and carp, and then straight into the Baltic Sea where we would reef in cod, mackerel and salmon.

After years of cold-water fishing, I headed for the warm water of Florida where I've been offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic since 1995. Now I navigate my craft, the "Fishin' Pole," a 30ft Grady White 306 Bimini center console, off the Florida Keys where I hunt down dolphin, swordfish, wahoo and a variety of bottom species!

What's more, if you're not looking to just crank in a fish the mates caught for you and you actually want to learn something, I'm ready and willing to take the time to share some of my own fish-hookin' know-how with you. Whether you're an experienced sport fisherman or not, I'll make sure your experience on the "Fishin' Pole" will make you feel like an Ol' Salt! Call me when you are ready to get your hands bloody, and let's kill some fish.

Watch for Us on the Discovery Channel

Florida Travel and leisure spent the day at Robbie's a few weeks ago. The Hostess, Will Behrens and her crew went fishing with Skye Stanley on the Blue Heaven and caught some really nice King Fish.

They returned to the dock and went out on our mid day snorkeling trip on the Happy Cat snorkel boat.  The high light was of course feeding the Tarpon which cooperated by jumping and putting on quite a show.

After such a busy day, they relaxed on the tarpon deck and had Chef Joseph create a wonderful Cook Your Catch Meal. The show is called affordable Florida and will be airing on the discovery channel on March 26th in the morning. Watch for it!!!

The Tarpon

March is here and with the turn of the page from February to March we have started Tarpon fishing again. With temperatures in February well above average the waters have warmed up and the migratory fish are starting to show up in numbers. At the end of the dock here at Robbie's we are starting to see much larger fish with many well over 80-100 pounds. That translates into much larger fish to be caught.

Tarpons are considered one of the great saltwater game fishes, not only because of the size they can reach and their accessible haunts, but because of their fighting spirit when hooked; they are very strong, making spectacular leaps into the air. The Atlantic tarpon, Megalops atlanticus, inhabits coastal waters from Virginia to Brazil, throughout the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean.  Islamorada is known as the sports fishing capital of the world and many believe that we acquired this nickname from the vast numbers of tarpon caught here over the years.

Many famous anglers have pursued this "trophy fish" here in Islamorada. When the commercialism of salmon fishing eventually drove Ted Williams south, he began a love affair with tarpon fishing among the Florida Keys, at the Islamorada marina where he kept his boat, he had a standing bet of 50 cents for any day he returned to the dock without a fish. He rarely lost money.

Tarpons feed almost exclusively on schooling fish and occasionally crabs. Tarpons have been recorded at up to 98in in length and weighing up to 350 lbs. The Florida state record for tarpon caught with conventional tackle is 243 pounds, caught by Gus Bell in Key West in 1975.  Atlantic Tarpons are also known as the Silver King.

Captain Chris king was born and raised on the waters here in Islamorada and has fished for just about everything that swims.  For years He was the Captain of the Captain Michael party boat and during that time developed a keen understanding of what customers want in a fishing trip. "Tarpon are by far the most exciting fish for a customer to catch. And for many it is the fish of a lifetime."

Captain Chris has developed a loyal following of people who come back year after year in pursuit of the Silver King, with several coming from Europe.  His 21' Mako is ideal for parties of two to three, whether a father and son or a married couple Chris will show you a great time with an above average chance of getting several tarpon to the boat for the photo op of a lifetime.
