THREE SECRETS TO A HAPPY CAT THIS CHRISTMAS
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Greetings!

Over the years we have been rescuing cats, we have learned a few lessons about cats and Christmas-time. We hope that you can learn from our experiences!

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

You probably aren't in the position we are (we have to anchor the tree to the wall) but there are still some hints and tricks to decorating your tree with curious kitties in mind.

Ornaments and Lights The use of many decorations will depend on the curiosity level of your cat. If he/she likes to bat at everything in sight, or chew on strings/wires, you probably shouldn't hang any ornaments or lights on the bottom branches of your tree. Place any breakable ornaments very high!

Tinsel This decoration is a big no-no. If you have a cat, don't even consider putting up tinsel. It's shiny and fun to play with, and your cat will be convinced that it's edible. Intestinal surgery is expensive, so just say no to tinsel!

The water Trees leak a sap into the stand they sit in. This sap is toxic to pets, but many think this is a pretty cool new water dish. You can buy a special tree skirt that wraps up the stand to cover it - and it looks nice, too! See the bottom of this issue for a recommendation.
PRESENTS

Your furry family members deserve gifts, too! Even on a budget, you can make some great gifts for your cats. Here are just a few ideas:

1. Create aluminum foil balls to play with

2. Grow catnip

3. Make homemade cat treats

4. Spend an extra hour snuggling with your cat!

STRESS

The holidays can be a little stressful for cats, as they sometimes have trouble adapting to change. All of a sudden, there is a big tree in their living room, new people coming and going, and they can sense the extra tension in their human family members!

Be sure you spend time reassuring your cat by talking to her and petting her. Also provide her with a special hiding place she can go when things get too overwhelming.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Rachel Kristiansen
