Fly on

Fly on

Though tired and worn out I am full of cheer
my wings battered and the day almost over
I rest not sure if I can fly on
But what a great journey it's been
through gray skies and blue
I have touched eternity
The closer I get to the end
the more I realize it is only a beginning
I am over-joyed - not at what life has planned for me next
but in the not knowing
I am thankful that eternity is one surprise after another
and that my atoms will be scattered again and again
throughout the Cosmos
Will you tip a glass with me?

Florida Crystals, IDI plan facility

 Susan Salisbury

Florida Crystals Corp. and IDI, an Atlanta-based, privately held logistics real estate company, have entered into an alliance for the planning and marketing of a South Florida inland port in western Palm Beach County, company officials said Thursday.

"This exclusive alliance capitalizes on Florida Crystals' resources as one of Palm Beach County's largest private landowners and IDI's proven success acquiring and developing 143 million square feet of industrial space in more than 566 industrial facilities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico," said Gaston Cantens, vice president of Florida Crystals.

Florida Crystals' 850-acre site between Belle Glade and South Bay, has received the county's approval for up to 10 million square feet of distribution and warehouse space as well as a rail yard.

"South Florida industrial markets continue to improve," said Scott Helms, IDI's senior vice president/regional development officer.

"This is primarily being led by the leasing activity in Miami-Dade County, which now has a vacancy of 6.1 percent, and Broward County at 8.1 percent."

As these markets continue to improve, coupled with the scarcity and high pricing of industrial-zoned land in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, demand will start to push north and the South Florida Intermodal Logistics Center project will become a viable option for large distribution users, he said.

"We were drawn to the project because we believe a site off U.S. 27 is prime to meet large logistics user demand," Helms said.

Herbert Hoover Dike Report

There is total agreement amongst all the review groups that the safe performance of this project cannot be guaranteed with the lake elevation above 17 feet. This is a 1-in-10-year event. Furthermore, there is anecdotal evidence that the situation is deteriorating with the lake at Elevation 15.3 feet (2003). It is believed that the system came very close to failure in
1995 and 1998, when lake levels were at Elevation 18.8 and 18.4 feet respectively, and that some reaches of the embankment have been seriously damaged as a result of these high lake elevations. It is recalled that the prime purpose of HHD is for flood control.
