Mission:  The Florida Wildlife Corridor aims to protect and restore connected landscapes throughout the Florida Peninsula to create a viable corridor from the Everglades to Georgia. The corridor addresses the fragmentation of natural landscapes and watersheds from the Everglades ecosystem north. Contributing to the fragmentation problem is the disconnect between the perceptions of Floridians, and the real need to keep natural systems connected.

Generating Awareness

The centerpiece of this strategy is the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition scheduled to launch January 17, 2012, and traverse the Everglades ecosystem into Big Cypress, over to the Everglades Agricultural Area, back to the Okaloacoochee Slough, across the Caloosahatchee, over to Babcock Ranch, back along Fisheating Creek toward Lake Okeechobee, up the Kissimmee River with excursions toward the Lake Wales Ridge, up the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, east around Orlando into Ocala National Forest, and north along the O2O corridor (Ocala to Osceola) to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The trek will cover approximately 1,000 miles over 100 days.

Lack of access is the primary reason that keeps anglers from enjoying a day on the water. With expanding land development and growing regulations restricting angler access, federally owned lands are more important than ever for recreational fishing opportunity. However, a recent Congressional report concluded that more than 35 million acres of land owned by two federal land management agencies - the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service - have inadequate access for sportsmen and women.

The Solution

The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act (H.R. 2834), will increase access to angling, hunting and recreational shooting on federal lands by prioritizing these activities within agencies' land management plans. The bill will require that federal lands be operated as "open-until-closed" with respect to recreational access and that any new regulations, management plans or land use initiatives be evaluated to minimize their impact on traditional outdoors activities such as fishing.

Take Action

The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act will increase public access to federal lands for recreational fishing and other traditional outdoor activities. Click here to take action now!

The 2012 Legislative Session kicked off this week with high energy and a "let's get it done" attitude. Committee action was strong as legislators strived to get bills into play before the constitutionally mandated demands of redistricting and budgeting consumed them.

First, thank you so much for those who have already contacted their legislators regarding the two worst bills of the session so far for all of us who care so much about Florida's water resources. But, for those of you who have not, it is important to remember that nothing will change if we just talk to ourselves. Whether we think we will make an immediate difference or not, we must speak up. Pl...ease email us at connect@floridaconservationcoalition.org and share your efforts with us. Another reminder, write your own legislators as well as the ones listed as sponsors!

1.HB 1103 by Representative Goodson and its compantion bill SB 1362 by Senator Hays must be strongly opposed. These bills redefine the present boundary line between privately owned land and public land in and along the State's rivers, lakes and streams. This boundary line is known as the "Ordinary High Water Line". The effect of this legislation would be a lowering of the elevation of the Ordinary high Water Line, thus moving the ownership boundary of private lands further towards or into the water and shrinkage of acreage currently inpublic ownership. This would result in huge transfers of publicly owned land along the State's rivers, lakes and streams into private ownership and amount to the loss of thousands of acres of land that now belong to all the people of Florida.
