Stormy Night - Serene Puja

Margaret writes: On 6 July a goodly number of us braved the appalling weather (the Aire in the city centre looked as if it was about to burst its banks), and  the heavy traffic, for a wonderfully inspiring evening led by Debbie and Rosemary, and dedicated to Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

Puja ShrineThe shrine, with its candles and red carnations looked lovelier and lovelier as the light began to fade. Rosemary placed a picture nearby which depicted the ordained members of the Tiratna Buddhist Community as Avalokitesara's thousand arms.

The evening began with Debbie telling us about Avalokitesvara's head shivering into eleven pieces because the compassion he felt for people's suffering became so intense. He also grew a thousand arms to give help to all those suffering beings.

Rosemary then led us in a Metta Bhavana meditation inthousand-armed Avalokitesvara which she called to mind the other people who occupy Leeds Bridge House. I found this very helpful: they are in such close proximity, and yet I realised I hardly give them a thought!

We then moved on to the Puja which generated a very special feeling of peace and tranquillity, especially, as by the end, the shrine was covered in candles as we made offerings.

The hard work and preparation which goes into these evenings is very apparent and we are privileged to be enjoying them on a monthly basis.

Coming up in August

The ritual part of all four of the following evenings consists of reciting (or listening to) devotional verses, some chanting and an opportunity (if you so wish) to make offerings to the shrine.

Please join us, either to participate in, or be part of, our communal evenings, all of which are suitable for anyone who has learned to meditate.

Sangharakshita's Birthday Party

Without Sangharakshita, the Triratna Community (andSangharakshita Leeds Buddhist Centre) would not exist. As our founder and teacher, he has opened the door to the Buddha's teachings in a way that was not available before. This evening is an opportunity to express our gratitude, celebrate his 87th Birthday (later this month) and rejoice in his generosity and wisdom.

The evening will begin prompt at 7.00 pm with an affectionate (and often humorous) film, featuring clips from Bhante's life (produced to celebrate his 75th Birthday). After the break there will be a White Tara puja with mantras and readings from Sangharakshita's own account of his life. Led by Jenny and Kathy with readings from Sarah and Joy.

There will be candles!

 The Three Jewels Foundation Course

This is a ten week course exploring the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha - the Three Jewels of the Buddhist tradition.

Some areas which we will explore are:

What is a Buddhist? The Buddha  as the teacher, as an exemplar, as the goal; the Buddha we can contact, and the mythic Buddha.

The Dharma as the Buddha's teachings and as path to awakening.

Sangha as means of development, as  community, and as the goal.

Suitable for anyone who has been coming to the Buddhist Centre regularly for 3 months or more, and who would like to explore further. You don't need to be academic or intellectually-minded to take part, but you will need to be willing to read and reflect on a short written passage each week, relate this to your own experience and to contribute to informal discussion.

The course will run on Monday evenings

(6.30pm to 8.30pm) beginning 24th September.

The cost for the course will be £60/£30 (concessions). Numbers will be limited to eight people so please book early.

My Religion is Kindness

Sunday 26 - Friday 31 August 2012

Everybody is welcome to attend!

Buddhafield North Women's RetreatDayaka writes: Buddhafield North are enjoying their 10th year of running camping retreats in the sunny upland of Yorkshire! Again we will be enjoying our annual experiment in communal living whilst reflecting on Buddhism, meditating, doing puja, bodywork and just generally hanging out in a supportive environment.

The retreat will provide an opportunity to deepen our experience of ourselves, the people around us and of nature. There will also be optional training sessions in woodland crafts and we will provide periods of activities forCampfire children.

"So with a boundless heart should one cherish all living beings, radiating kindness over the entire world". This years theme is "My Religion is Kindness" and we'll ask the question: is it possible for us to practice kindness in everything we do, and what practical steps can we take to really radiate kindness?

Families Welcome!

P.S. If you would like to join the team for a few days before or after to help set up and/ or take down please let Dayaka know. BFN are offering 12 free places. If you bring your own camping gear we will provide food and time for medication

Buddhism on a Plate: Food and the First Precept

Buddhism on a Plate, published recently, is another in The Buddhist Centre's series of occasional feature articles.

On the subject of veganism and, more generally, how Buddhists might best apply the precept of non-violence to their choice of food, it's written by Samacitta, chair of Triratna's Birmingham Buddhist Centre and a vegan for many years.

Jane Easton, Food & Cookery Coordinator at Viva! and the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation and a Buddhist herself comments "... great article, very clear and inspiring. I can't tell you how much it means to see this growth of awareness in the Buddhist community. I've been doing my own little thing since I first got involved and I know others have too, but there seems to be a big shift in the vegan direction across the board in the past year or so. It's very very exciting and inspiring!"

News is also in that Sangharakshita has recently adopted veganism having been  'convinced by the arguments' expressed by members of the Order and others.

Jane goes on -  "Interestingly, vegan Labour MP Kerry McCarthy did the first ever World Vegan Day speech in the Commons last year and even arranged for all vegan catering in the Commons canteen on the day including fantastic, decadent cakes from the Ms Cupcake company. Who'da thunk it?"

Buddhism on a Plate is available on thebuddhistcentre's ISSUU account in an easy-to-read on-screen format.

Relax, you've arrived

By Rick Hanson Phd

We spend so much of our time trying to get somewhere.

diverPart of this comes from our biological nature. To survive, animals - including us - have to be goal-directed, leaning into the future.

It's certainly healthy to pursue wholesome aims, like paying the rent on time, raising children well, healing old pain, or improving education.

But it's also important to see how this focus on the future - on endless striving, on getting the next task done, on climbing the next mountain - can get confused and stressful.

It's confused because the brain:

  • Overestimates both the pleasure of future gains and the pain of future losses. (This evolved to motivate our ancient ancestors to chase carrots hard and really dodge sticks.)
  • Makes the future seem like a real thing when in fact it doesn't actually exist and never will. There is only now, forever and always.
  • Overlooks or minimizes the alrightness of this moment - including the many things already resolved or accomplished - in order to keep you looking for the next threat or opportunity.

Wolf Tears

In the forest

The man who never sleeps

Dreams of circles.

Wildness drops down his cheek

Wet history on his pillow of grasses

For Fabrice

It's still.

The night moves,

But you don't belong.

Yeah,

Wait for the kettle to boil,

there's more to life than one heartbeat.

You belong.

Something is going to happen.
