Free Buddhist Audio Event this Thursday
This Thursday 27th January, Viriyalila will be over from the USA to visit our Centre and talk about the work of Free Buddhist Audio (http://www.freebuddhistaudio.com) which, as you might know, is the organisation which maintains the Triratna soundViriyalila archive and makes Dharma talks and study materials available - and easily accessible - to anyone who has access to the internet.

Viriyalila will be talking about the work of FBA and the Triratna Dharma revolution online and the cutting edge technology which supports deep practice. She'll be playing some audio tracks which explore themes relating to our oral tradition and the different learning and teaching styles in it. Many of us rely on and value the mitra study courses and other material available on FBA so this is a great opportunity to learn more about the archive and its work.

The evening will begin promptly at 7.00 pm.

Clear Out Your Clutter...

for the Triratna JUMBLE SALE this March

We're  organising a fund-raising Jumble Sale in Chapel Allerton one Saturday in March so we need all your unwanted household items, books and clothes as soon as possible. (and those of your friends, neighbours and relatives too!)

Please stick everything in cardboard boxes, seal with tape, mark as 'jumble' and bring to the centre as soon as you can. David will collect the boxes weekly and store them until the event.

Apart from this being a great opportunity to detach yourself from some of the possessions in your life, donating stuff is also an act of great generosity which will benefit the Sangha (and the people who buy the items).

We'll also need about 15-20 volunteers on the day (from around 9.00 am to about 2pm) and, as a perk, you will get the first chance to buy any goods that you fancy. If you've ever done a jumble sale, you'll know already what fun it is but we also hope that it will be a great sangha-builder and also raise lots of much-needed cash for the Centre.

Details of the date will be circulated soon

Ratnaguna's Book Launch
Thursday 10th February

Ratnaguna will be at the Centre to talk about his new book The Art of Reflection, and to tell us how to go about this valuable and important practice. Reflection, he says, helps us understand ourselves and other people better, so it can go some way to help alleviate suffering as well as being enjoyable and (sometimes) challenging.

"No-one who takes seriously the study and practise of the Dharma should fail to read this ground breaking book."

Sangharakshita

See Colin Mawhinney's review below

The evening begins promptly at 7 pm. Everyone welcome.

Kathy's sponsored slim
KathyFrom Jan 1st to July 1st Kathy plans to lose between 20 and 40 pounds and she would very much like you to sponsor her, as this will give her even more incentive. The good news is that every penny raised by Kathy will be split equally between the Centre and the Buddhafield land appeal.

You can add your name and amount to the growing list on the noticeboard or you can contact Kathy direct (kathyjarvis64@gmail.com)

Super friends Appeal...
...is S-l-o-w-i-n-g Down
We had a great start to our appeal for financial support for the Centre but since the New Year the flow of new standing orders has almost dried up. We are nearly a third of our way to our target - but we need more.

REMEMBER:
  1. We are only asking you to donate £5 per month (more if you can afford it) and you can date your standing order to begin in February or March if this is easier
  2. The centre will eventually close if we don't raise enough money to clear our deficit
  3. Generosity is part of our practice and this small act of dana will keep the centre functioning for the sake of others as well as yourself.
If you aren't already contributing, please consider doing so
Please print off a Standing Order Form here
(it's very easy to complete) and return it to the Leeds Buddhist Centre Office asap.
artofreflectionReflecting on the Art of Reflections

Colin Mawhinney reviews Ratnaguna's new book - The Art of Reflection

Art of Reflection coverThis is an important book recently published by Ratnaguna - one of the leading thinkers and clearest communicators in the Triratna Buddhist Community. As important as Ratnaguna is and has been over many years as a teacher and speaker he hasn't often turned his hand to writing and this is the first book from him that I can recall.

New he may be to the medium of publishing but Ratnaguna certainly doesn't disappoint, bringing all the clarity and insights that characterise his talks (on Free Buddhist Audio) into the world of print.

This is not just a personal view. Sangharashita, the founder of our  Buddhist Community commends the book with fulsome praise

"No-one who takes seriously the study and practise of the Dharma should fail to read this ground breaking book."

Strong praise indeed not least because as those who know him can testify Bhante doesn't give such praise lightly.

So why can a book of just 146 pages be so deserving of such a glowing recommendation? I suspect it's the sheer skill with which Ratnaguna takes an everyday activity, like thinking, and shows us why it matters and how it can lead us in a journey taking us all the way to enlightenment. Along the way he stops and takes advice from all manner of thinkers and writers - from Nick Hornby to Monica Ali, through to Schopenhauer - to support a central thread drawn from the Buddha's words, recorded in a range suttas on the matter.

But this isn't just about other people's words. This is, as I said, about a journey from wordsRatnaguna to experience and it's a journey undertaken through the fine art of reflection. He shows us quite simply how to do it, the alternatives available and the depths to which we can go in moving from simple everyday thinking to imaginative insight in the higher realms of spiritual experience.  My only regret about the book is that it wasn't published 10 years ago. I might have avoided a few cul-de-sacs as a habitual and obsessive over-thinker. As it is, I would agree that it is essential reading for Mitras and order members alike and a worthwhile browse for those simply interested in learning how to think better!

Ratnaguna will be giving a talk  on the 'Art of Reflection' and signing copies of his new book at the Leeds Triratana Buddhist Centre at 7 pm on 10th February

Lineham Farm Meditation

Lineham Farm Sangha Retreat 18th to 20th March
Open to everyone with a meditation practice

The first of our two weekend retreats this year will be led by Uddyotani and the theme will be 'Finding Balance' - exploring the Buddha's Middle Way.

This is a friendly, social retreat, and a very good way to deepen your practice. It is open to everyone who practices meditation. It is especially recommended if you have not been on any kind of retreat before, or are relatively new to the Centre.

A booking form will be on the Centre noticeboard shortly.

Morning Relaxation and Breakfast Club

Zara writes:

I am hoping to start a weekday, early bird meditation session at the centre.

SunriseThe session will be on Tuesdays to start with but may expand with enough interest. The idea is to create a tranquil, retreat-like space where people can come along to commence their busy days in a warm and friendly environment.

I expect the centre will be open for around 1.5 to 2 hours, with breaks throughout for people to come and go as they choose. Meditations will be at scheduled times, lasting around half an hour. If in demand, breakfast items such as cereals, toast and fruit will be made available in exchange for dana. Whilst meditation sessions will run all morning, I would also like to leave people the option to simply come along and enjoy a peaceful breakfast with sangha friends.

This new session will only run if there is sufficient interest (so far a couple of people have come forward), so please email me, or add your name to the list in the Centre, if you think you may occasionally wish to attend. Please also specify an estimated time that you would ideally like to come along. I can then work out how early to open up and schedule the meditations. I am guessing a slot between 7.30 & 10.00 would be appropriate but I'm open to suggestions.

Metta,

Zara

Meditation Timers - Download for free

It can be distracting, having to check your watch every so often to see how long you've been meditating, or how long you have still got to go. Also it can be all too easy to give up early when you are timing yourself.

There's a simple solution though - MP3 chimes can be easily downloaded from the LeedsShadow Buddha Buddhist Centre website and it costs you nothing except a few clicks of your mouse.

And the really useful thing about using a timer is that it removes responsibility from you for the length of the sit. Meaning that all you have to do is carry on meditating until you hear the final bell.

There are a number of lengths available:

5 minute chime

This is one chime followed by silence to a total time of 5 minute. Use multiple copies of this download on your CD or MP3 player to create a meditation timer of any length. For instance use 4 copies of this download played one after the other to create a twenty minute sit with separated by 4 chimes.

25 minute chime

This is a 25 minute sit. It has one chime to begin with, one chime in the middle and one chime at the end. The rest of the download is silence.

30 minute chime

This is a 30 minute sit. It has one chime to begin with, one chime in the middle and one chime at the end. The rest of the download is silence.

35 minute chime

This is a 35 minute sit. It has one chime to begin with, one chime in the middle and one chime at the end. The rest of the download is silence.

Lead In

This is 2 minutes of silence. Useful to combine with any of the above download to give a period of silence to settle into the meditation before the first chime. Can also be combined with the 5 minute chimes download to lengthen the time between bells.
