Spring Has Sprung

Garden Fair & Native Plant Sale
Saturday, May 5 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

The Nature Conservancy is proud to host the Rockingham County Master Gardener's annual spring garden fair and native plant sale! Come out, peruse the booths, and stock up on native plants for your landscape. Perennials, herbs, and shrubs from local gardens will be available. Receive expert advice and resources from UNH Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners.

This event is rain or shine and includes:
- Gardening for the Birds, Butterflies, and Bees
- Herb Heaven
- Oyster Restoration in Great Bay
- Demonstration of Creative Spaces for Growing Vegetables
- Coexisting with Critters in Your Gardens
- Soil PH Testing (bring a sample to test!)
- Maintaining Your Lawn Organically

The Great Bay Office of The Nature Conservancy is located at 112 Bay Road, Newmarket. Take route 108 to Newmarket. Travel 1.4 miles down Bay Road. The office is on the right.

The goals of the meeting were to provide information about stock assessment and modeling, outline the current cod crisis, provide examples of alternatives to the current management system, and to provide a forum for discussion about solutions to move forward. There Are More Ticks Around This Spring
There were 1,287 cases of Lyme disease in New Hampshire last year, the second highest rate in the country. The same tick that's the principal vector of Lyme disease also spreads two other diseases that are on the rise here: Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis; a lot of people haven't heard of them, but they're serious. Protecting Whales? Thanks to UNH, There's an App for That
Researchers at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) helped develop a new iPad and iPhone application that aims to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales from collisions with ships. (UNH Campus Journal)

Two New Hampshire 4-H Volunteers Honored
Judy Cogger of Brentwood is the recipient of the 2012 National 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition award for volunteers who have served 10 or more years. (UNH Cooperative Extension Update)

UNH Dining Services Hosts Sustainable Seafood Dinner
Head chef Ralph Coughenour purchased about 400 pounds of fresh seafood (pollock, hake and lobster) from The Portsmouth Lobster Company based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Shrimp were bought locally in Portsmouth and Ipswich, MA. (New Hampshire Sustainable Marine Fisheries)

Under Threat, Atlantic Sturgeon Not Forgotten in New Hampshire
Sturgeon grow to be as large as 14 feet long, and can weight between 800 and 1,000 pounds. The New Hampshire Fish and Game department has documented only a handful of encounters between humans and Atlantic sturgeon in the last 30 years. (fosters.com)
