Nonwovens in the News: Obstructing Oil
It is difficult to go through a day without hearing about the April 20 explosion of the British Petroleum (BP) drilling rig that caused massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Even with attempts to cap the well, a major concern is still how to control the unconstrained oil.

A popular solution in the gulf has been nonwoven meltblown absorbent devices such as floating booms. With proper testing and development, these booms provide a method to absorb and prevent the future spread of oil.

However, a surging demand for a particular type of Nonwoven material used to create the booms has environmental protection agencies puzzled about where to locate the necessary supply of material to control the leak.
