Congratulations to Kelly and Shane Putty, American Heroes 7 and 8 for 2011.
Many organizations and indeed even countries, like our own America, have been founded on the need for a call to action. It is when this call to action is undertaken by people of integrity and with the utmost faith in God that victories are won and lives are saved.
Two people that have risen to answer that call to action are Kelly and Shane Putty. Kelly Putty is an adoption advocate and founder of the Ordinary Hero Foundation, www.ordinaryhero.org. Kelly and her husband, Shane, have given their time and talent to this foundation that helps people from all walks of life. It doesn't matter who or what those people are or were; where they have or haven't been. If a person is in need, then the Puttys feel that it is their duty to help.
Kelly refers to the birth of the Foundation as being an accident. She claims that she has no idea why she is drawn to help others although it is clearly God's plan for her to do so.
"I have often asked myself why I have a heart to help people. Why is it when I see a person in need I want to stop what I'm doing and go to them? Why is it that the dirty, helpless people are the ones that draw me in? Instead of shuddering and turning the other way I want to go sit right in the middle of them."
At age 16, Kelly was raped and beaten. She was told that she would never have children of her own. However, Kelly placed her trust in God and found that she was indeed healed - in heart, mind and body. Today, Kelly and Shane have five beautiful children of their own, plus a son the Puttys adopted in Nigeria.
The Puttys were determined to teach their children to understand the value of every person and to appreciate what they have been given. On the weekends, the entire family would go into downtown Nashville to hand out food and coffee to the homeless. Kelly says that it taught each of her children a valuable lesson. From there, Kelly began to involve her church group and the organization grew.
The actions of the Puttys and Ordinary Hero are countless, from helping needy children with finding adoptive families to feeding the homeless and assisting people with housing. The Puttys also encourage others to become ordinary heroes and to help anyone that should come into their path in a time of need.
Thank you Kelly and Shane Putty for your inspiring work and for helping to make America good and, therefore, great.
Post Script Our goal is to identify, during 2011, 56 current-day heroes with the same character, commitment and courage as the 56 who signed our Declaration of Independence. If you would like to nominate someone please send your idea to news@americanvalues.com. If you would like to receive this email newsletter you may email us or add your name by clicking here.
