JANUARY  2012

Know Yoga, Know Peace

 Greetings!

Welcome to 2012!

I would like to start this year with just three words.

Live, Love, Laugh.

Live your best life in 2012.

Love from a place of "Gratitude".

Laugh often.

Read the right sidebar for upcoming special yoga events, community yoga classes, a yoga eco-tour to Costa Rica, books, videos, interesting quotes, YNM newsletter archives and our featured natural health and wellness magazine.

Also, don't forget to join me at two upcoming yoga conferences. One is a virtual (on-line) conference and the other is the Northwest Yoga Conference in Lynnwood, WA.  Both are of these exciting events are coming in February!

I'm excited to be teaching Health+Wealth=Happiness at YogaHub's annual Virtual Yoga and Meditation conference. But you don't have to wait long to join in the fun...

YogaHub is offering 3 special complimentary sessions where you can meet some of the teachers, try out the virtual format, and learn new yoga and meditation tips.

Best of all, this pre-conference event won't cost you a dime!

Check it out here:

Look for more to come on the big virtual conference coming up in February 2012. For now, get a head start and take advantage of this sneak peek!

Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages. It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor to kick-start your stretching and flexibility program if you are starting a new one.

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who attend the classes and practice to the best of their abilities. And to the teachers who continue the yoga tradition. I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga

"The art of yoga begins with a code of behavior in order to build up moral conduct, physical conduct, mental conduct and spiritual conduct." - B.K.S. Iyengar

As you know by now yoga is an ancient practice, over 3000 years old, with roots in the Indus Valley of India. It consists of both a way of life and philosophy. There are many branches and systems of yoga practiced by people from all walks of life in every corner of the world. What brings someone to yoga as a regular wellness practice? For many people it is primarily the asana (postures) that have proven to have signifigant health benefits. Others study the mind/body concepts of yoga at a deeper level to gain a well rounded understanding of the practice.

An ancient yogi named Patangali described the eight limbs of yoga. Following is a brief description;

1. Yama, reflection of or true nature

2. Niyama, evolution towards harmony

3. Asana, confort in being - posture

4. Pranayama, enhancement and guidance of universal prana

5. Pratyahara, encouraging the senses to draw within

6. Dharana, gathering and focusing the conciouseness within

7. Dhyana, continuous inward flow of consciousness

8. Samadhi, union with your true nature
