DECEMBER  2011

Know Yoga, Know Peace

 Greetings!

Happy Holidays.

As we bring 2011 to a close and set our sights on the new year it is always helpful to take time to reflect, give thanks and appreciation.  You worked hard to overcome one or more struggles of this modern life. In some areas you  met or surpassed your own expectations and accomplished your goals.  This effort to look back should signal to your mind, body and spirit a sense of closure and the potential for the future.

In the yoga tradition we connect with the body via the mind as we enter a particular asana (a yoga pose). Once you are inside the asana (and holding it for a minute or two) you bring your awareness to the current moment using the breath. And as you exit the posture you reconnect with the movement via the mind as you release the asana into the past. This simple yoga technique is similar to our annual leaving one year in our past and looking forward with optimism towards the new year. The important thing we should remember is that we have a gift (life) to cherish. As we close out 2011 let's find time in the rush (to count down towards the new year)  to stop for a few minutes each day, sit quietly, take a few deep breaths. Appreciate the opportunity to prepare for living your best life in 2012.

Our featured article is about "Gratitude".  I express through this article what it means for me to live from a place of gratitude.

Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor to kick-start your stretching and flexibility program if you are starting a new one.

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who attend the classes and  practice to the best of their abilities. And to the teachers who continue the 5000 year old yoga tradition. I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting.

Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health throughout 2012.

Gratitude.

The gifts that I have are not just material objects. I offer my time and talent to share with others in many ways. It may be just to create a flyer for an event on my old laptop computer. And at times to have my grandkids or friends over to watch a movie on my old TV.

At this time of the year I like to take a time out. And spend time in nature, walking among the beauty of creation. The walks help me to retune all of my senses to a feeling of appreciation. I think little about the things I have. These are just tools that allow me to share and help others.

The feelings I have today, yesterday and tomorrow will always be one of taking what comes into my life (good or otherwise) and using it for positive transformation. A recent experience has helped me understand that it is not about what you have or what other people see from the outside and the judgements they make about you.

I am thankful to know that one treasure that flows in abundance given freely to us as we arrive in the world is our inate ability to love another person.  Use your gifts (love and life) wisely with positive energy and mindfulness.

I started a gratitude journal many years ago. It is something that is easy to start. You just open it each day and write down what you are thankful for. It can help transform your life towards more positive outcomes.
