Greetings!
Welcome back.
Kanjin yoga is happy to offer new gentle yoga classes in Mt. Baker. See the details on the right (side-bar). And, please let your friends who golf know about our Yoga4Golf program.
There are so many opportunities to treat yourself or a loved one to a yoga class during the upcoming holiday season. You can think of yoga as the gift that keeps on giving. A yoga gift certificate or a 10-class card is a perfect way to surprise your special someone. Remember yoga is for everyone! I have had the pleasure of teaching for people of all ages and body types. After one or two six-week (or sixteen week sessions) most students become stronger and more flexible. Some may have reduced a little weight or trimmed inches from their waistline. The students move with grace through a flow of postures including; gentle standing and sitting postures. Occasionally we use some yoga props (such as a chair, block, strap or the wall). At the end of the session the students say they have new energy and less stress. Others say they can now touch their toes, when this was not possible before starting the yoga class. Our featured article is about "Yoga Traditions". I call my morning routine "the sunrise flow". It is a way to fill the body with energy from the time you open your eyes in the morning in order to prepare the mind/body/spirit for the day. Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages. It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor to kick-start your stretching and flexibility program if you are starting a new one.
Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who attend the classes and many others in the community who help me promote yoga. I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you. Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health throughout 2011. The sunrise flow.
Upon rising slowly open your eyes and take a few deep breaths. If you slept with the window slightly open you will feel the fresh morning air moving through the lungs. Bring your awareness to the new day. Give thanks and appreciation. Bring your feet gently to the earth. Relieve the body as needed. Drink one or two large glasses of water. Stand with your legs hip distance apart and knees slightly bent, let your arms rest at your side. Twist the upper body to the right then left (move head and shoulders along with the body as you twist from the waist). Repeat for ten right-to-left twists. As much as possible inhale and exhale through the nose. Repeat again for ten right-to-left twists. Bring the legs together, stand tall and take a few breaths. Take a short 10-min break. Brush your teeth and check the health of your tongue. Use cool water to rinse your face. Drink another glass of water. Relieve the body as needed. Stand on the front of the yoga mat and begin your sunrise flow moving slowly at first until the body becomes warm. Increase the number of repetitions as you feel the muscles respond to the fresh oxygenation. Continue for up to 50 minutes. As you cool down, bring the body to rest on the mat. lay flat on your back, eyes closed and relax into Savasana (the most difficult posture of them all). After the sunrise flow ( continue with your normal morning routine) then take your yoga off the mat and into your daily life.
The sunrise flow is part of my personal yoga practice. It helps me start the day with energy and mindfulness.
