OCTOBER 2011

Know Yoga, Know Peace

Greetings!

YOGAWOMAN the movie is playing in Seattle, three (3) days at three (3) locations. Never underestimate the power of inner peace. From the streets of Manhattan to the dusty slums of Kenya, YOGAWOMAN uncovers a global phenomenon that has changed the face of yoga forever.

Kanjin yoga is the host for this movie event at three locations Beacon Hill, Rainier Community Center, Columbia City. RSVP today. This is a special event in support of the community yoga programs offered by Kanjin Yoga. We appreciate your support. See the details at the event web site. www.kanjinyoga.com

This month (every Friday 7-8PM) our gentle yoga class is at El Centro De La Raza (The Center for People of All Races) on Beacon Hill.  This is a historic location and I am so happy to hold classes at this site.  Join Us.

Another wellness program is a FREE Health is Wealth seminar that will be available on-line. The link to the seminar will be posted at the web site (www.kanjinyoga.com).

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who attend the classes and many others in the community who help me promote yoga. Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor to kick-start your stretching and flexibility program if you are starting a new one.

I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I
can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you.
Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health throughout 2011.

Namaste,
D

My thoughts about three yoga postures.

Three poses that do not seem difficult at first are half moon, backward bend and forward bend (with head to knee) If you attempt them with a lot of resistance they will leave you with lots of doubt about whether it is possible to go deeper. I found that if I only used minimal effort it was possible to accomplish the poses with minimal results. It took me four years to deepen my confidence in these three poses. The three poses stretch the spine and unlock those areas that gain little attention due to our primarily sedentary lifestyle. In my case, since I sit a lot at work in front of the computer going deeper in these postures has helped relieve that tension at the base of my spine. I learned a lot about fear with the backward bend. When you are bending backward or forward in a position your mind has fear of a head crash to the ground. It can be unsettling at first. Nothing was further from the truth. Even with a forward bend, as in head to knee postures, it seems impossible at first, but over time, my body wanted to lean further into the posture and eventually it did.

"Inside a forward fold with my head on my knee, I focus on just one thing; breathe naturally." - D. Williams

Over several months I developed a routine through a combination of meditation, physical workouts - including walking, dancing, biking that helped my body remain strong and healthy. These types of physical exercises after a time become more of a backup to my asana
yoga practice. I became stronger mentally and physically using techniques learned in my yoga classes, the heart of which is control of the breath and the thoughts in the mind.
