SEPTEMBER 2011

Know Yoga, Know Peace

Welcome to Yoga for the New Millennium!

This month we invite you to continue or start your yoga
journey with us. The yoga classes and workshops at
Kanjin Yoga are designed for you to explore yoga. And
discover your innate connection with this ancient art.

Kanjin means "observation of the mind".  And yoga is a combination of physical and mental techniques that help the whole body return to its natural state of well being.

The Restorative/Stress Reduction Yoga Workshop is
a time for gentle yoga combined with mindfulness based
stress reduction and is limited to 6-people. The workshop
will be held at The Kanjin Yoga and Retreat Center in Seattle. The workshop benefits range from stress reduction to a sense of better mind/body balance at a price that cannot be
beat ($30/person). Register NOW

This month there are two FREE downloads about the
benefits of yoga. Consider bringing a friend to a class. Check the September schedule for class availability and locations.

Our monthly community based wellness program is a FREE Health is Wealth seminar at the Rainier Beach library. (This program is not sponsored by the Seattle Public Library)

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students
who attend the classes and many others in the community who
help me promote yoga. Everyone benefits from staying active
at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor to kick-start your stretching and flexibility program
if you are starting a new one.

I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I
can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you.
Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health throughout 2011.

Namaste,
D

Yoga at the crossroads

of my life.

I began charting a new course for the chapters of my mid-life. It began simple enough. First through setting my intention and writing down what I wanted to see in my future. And building courage and taking actions towards my goals. I realize that everyday is an opportunity to live anew and perhaps change just a little (or a lot). I was willing to change, grow and learn new things about the world and about myself.

As my mid-life chapters began to unfold there was a period of time I recall waking up in the middle of the night covered in sweat. It was very uncomfortable. I wondered what was happening to me. I thought I was having a series of very bad dreams. In fact, many of my dreams at the time found me barely escaping some sudden emergency, which would cause my dream to seem more like a nightmare. I wanted to know more about why I sweated so profusely while sleeping. I learned that these are the symptoms of a woman's change of life. This was the beginning of a new period of growth. In addition, it is a natural process that each woman approaches in her own way. Sometimes the sweating happens during the day with a feeling of intense heat just under the skin "a hot flash".  It may last only a few minutes or come in waves over a longer period of time. But during the process, you  might feel like you are standing  at the door of a blast furnace. Over time I learned to use this time as a meditative moment, of thanks and appreciation.  And learning to place my mind into a meditative state helped me.

Once I knew that I was not sick I made a few changes to my lifestyle (after consulting my physician) in order to avoid extreme discomfort during these moments. Then I began keeping a journal to express through my writing. I would write down so many  things that I am thankful for and think about how I might make a difference in the world. The timing of the mid-life changes (for men and women) is not perfect. This is a metaphor for life, in that if we are open to change, our life will expose us to new challenges, when we least expect it. And it will always be exactly what we need in our life to either teach us a lesson or allow us to utilize our wisdom.

Here are the seven things that helped me through this transition;

1. accept that change is going to come
2. believe that I can change
3. daily meditate, practice yoga, eat and drink healthy
4. use self-inquiry to discover what I really want for my life
5. clearly articulate and affirm my intention
6. take actions towards my goals
7. let go of fear and detach from the way things used to be

Adding a regular yoga practice to my daily routine was great preparation for enhancing my determination, the quality of my daily actions and sitting for longer periods of meditation. In the yoga classes, the movements are "meditation in motion". Yoga teaches that it is possible to move with grace during a series of postures and maintain a deep inner calm. This ability transcends all actions on and off the mat.

Life Long Learning

06-29-2011 14:06:00 PM

Are you learning something new everyday? It occurs to me that each day I should try to learn something new about life, myself or my environment. I read a lot, and interact with people throughout the day. I mostly read non-fiction related to mind-body-spirit. These topics cover so much territory I am never bored or without a new book to check out in these areas. I change out the stack of books on my nightstand about once per month. Since I was a child and starting kindergarten I recall my love for reading. I did have the entire Dr. Seuss collection (I think). It was so much fun going into the library and taking a book from the shelf that I selected myself. I was encouraged from an early age to read, study and never miss school. So, as I am now continuing my reading and study the only thing that I miss is school. I continuously attend classes to further my knowledge about yoga and mind-body-spirit wellness. In addition to keeping up with some of  the latest technology advancements such as Cloud Computing or Audio/Video two of my other interests. I think the most important thing I have learned is the lessons from talking with others and listening. Each day I wake up and think about using the knowledge that I have to help others. The information about learning how the body works and using yoga as a method for healing the body has been an area that I have studied for over ten years. I have seen the benefits of a sustained yoga practice and learned to use yoga to repair damage from injuries, restore vitality to the major organs, release stored toxins and reduce unwanted weight.  Each time I step into a yoga class I know that there will be something for me to learn about myself and my students that will allow us both to grow together. Lifelong learning through yoga is never about a destination it is always about the journey....»
