   NEWPORT -  The Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce will join a growing number of Chambers across the state in hosting a Red Tape Workshop to develop reform suggestions as part of incoming Governor Paul LePage's Red Tape Removal Audit.  Community and business leaders from across the 12-town region are encouraged to attend and contribute to the process.

    Governor-Elect LePage has asked Maine's job creators to take part in his Red Tape Removal Audit.  It is an effort to identify regulations, statutes or compliance issues that need to be reformed to achieve a better balance between quality of life and the need for good jobs for Mainers.

    The Sebasticook Valley workshop will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Newport Cultural Center's second floor meeting room. The room is handicapped accessible. Light refreshments will be available. Advance registrations could be helpful by calling or emailing the Chamber, but are not required.

    Locally developed suggestions will be presented to the Governor-Elect and his transition team.  Copies also will be shared with area Legislators, who also will be invited to participate.

   All action taken on reform proposals follows Legislative procedures allowing both proponents and opponents to be heard before the appropriate Legislative committees, before reforms are presented for Legislative action.

Ellingwood was flanked by, from left, daughter  Jamie Haining, husband, Paul Ellingwood, daughter Jenna Upton, grandson Reed Upton, son-in-law Jerry Upton holding grandson Atticus Haining, with grandsons, Hunter and Owen Upton, in front.

   The new shop, open Tuesday through Saturday, features art supplies, a gift shop featuring the work of local and Maine artisans, an airbrush shop and the art studio. Supplies for watercolor, acrylic and oil work as well as pencil art are available or can be specially ordered as needed.

    The gift shop includes greeting cards, sewing, knitting, handcrafted fishing flies, gems, jewelry and beads, soaps and bath salts and new items are added as new artists join the effort. Art lessons in airbrushing or painting are also available, as well as group art dates for "Paint with Me" sessions working with the owner. Maine State Chamber and Maine Development Foundation unveil "Making Maine Work: The Role of Maine's Public University System"

AUGUSTA - Building on the priorities set forth in its July 2010 publication,

Making Maine Work, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce (MSCC) and the Maine Development Foundation (MDF) today released a companion report focusing on the impact of the University of Maine System (UMS) on the state's economy and the value of an educated and skilled workforce.  Titled "Making Maine Work: The Role of Maine's Public University System," the second installment of the Making Maine Work series contains a detailed account of current University System contributions to the state of Maine, as well as "best practices" from other states.  It offers tangible recommendations for the governor and the legislature to consider as we invest in the workforce of the very near future.

       "When we released Making Maine Work in July, it was our hope and intent to further scrutinize each of the eight issue areas contained in that report," said Dana Connors, president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. "Today, we begin that process with a look into higher education."

 KEEPING MAINE STUDENTS IN MAINE

Earlier this month, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce launched a new program called InternHelpME.com. InternHelpME.com is a statewide internship-matching web-based program that links employers, students, colleges and universities. This unique program helps establish a critical link between students and prospective employers and in doing so will help keep young adults here in Maine to begin their careers and grow our economy.

InternHelpME.com will:

·         Address "Brain Drain"

·         Address our aging workforce

·         Give Maine businesses access to a skilled workforce

·         Provide an economic development tool for business attraction

·         Encourage continuing education and higher ed attainment

·         Provide in-state and out-of-state students with meaningful opportunities in Maine

   The InternHelpME.com program's highly interactive web based search platform is a win-win for the student, employer and the college or university.

   Students often are not aware of the many career opportunities available to them right here in Maine in their area(s) of study. Through its sophisticated keyword search technology, the InternHelpME.com portal allows students to browse and connect with potential employers statewide.

   Internships are becoming a primary recruiting tool for companies across the country.

   InternHelpME.com will provide yet another venue for faculty and administration to communicate with students and business professionals involved with internships.

   The overall goals of the program are to 1.) Enhance career development efforts already in place by colleges and universities in Maine; 2.)Provide businesses with statewide access to workers like never before, and 3.) Offer students meaningful internship experiences in Maine.  These goals add up to a positive impact for Maine and our future workforce!

   Our current goal is to get as many businesses, in all industries, across the state to post their internship opportunities on the site by January 2011.

   The program is being managed through the Chamber's non-profit affiliate the Foundation for a Strong Maine Economy.

   If your business has an internship program and would like to utilize the InternHelpME.com website please log on to: www.internhelpme.com and click "NEW USER" in the upper right corner to create a workspace and start posting opportunities.

   If your company currently doesn't offer internships, we can help you get started today. Please contact Joyce LaRoche or Amy Downing at the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, or through the InternHelpME.com site.

A Special Thank You...and a wish list.

Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce
Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce

  It's here and what a difference....

 Dexter Lumber graciously donated a new door to our Chamber building to replace a well-worn one and help us retain a little more heat in the winter and cool air in the summer.

   THANK YOU for your support of our Chamber!

Formal recognition and appreciation is planned
...stay tuned.

 The Chamber periodically has needs and maybe you can help. We have developed a wish list or perhaps you have items that we could use in the office or in conjunction with fundraisers.

Our wish list includes:

We need

  • our flagpole fixed;
  • a new brochure/map cabinet on our porch;
  • a larger enclosed bulletin board;
  • and a group or individual interested in taking over our flower gardens for spring planting or bulbs in the fall.

Our planters could also use a holiday touch, if someone has time...we may have some materials.

Chamber planning...

q

   Plans are developing for 2011 projects.
Can we count on your help?
   Committees are meeting to plan the annual meeting in February (Feb. 10),  new Chamber publications are being planned for 2011 to update local information for travels and local residents alike.
    The sled dog races are scheduled in February; the Trade Show is scheduled for May 7 in Dexter this year! and another member has suggested a late spring car show, and we still need to plan a golf tournament and Sparkle 2011.

 Call with your ideas for a Chamber publication, function or fundraiser.
