Collection FAQs: Does Sample Location Matter?
Is one area of the manure likely to have a higher concentration of eggs than another area? Horsemen's Laboratory assures clients that when a horse has a positive fecal egg count, eggs are evenly distributed throughout the manure, so location from which the sample is collected does not affect the fecal egg count.
Should the container be filled with samples from several different areas of the manure pile? Because eggs are evenly distributed throughout, sampling more than one area will not affect the fecal egg count, so it is not necessary to collect small amounts from several different areas.
How full should the testing container be? Fill the collection container completely with manure that is free of hay and bedding. Doing so ensures an adequate amount for testing and limits the sample's exposure to air.
If you have questions about sample collection, deworming, or fecal egg count results, Dr. Byrd can answer questions and provide guidance.

Test Results by Email Only Beginning April 1
Many clients have already told us how much they appreciate receiving test results via email in a PDF format. For many years, we've followed up the email results with a U.S. mail hard copy version. We've also heard from many of our clients that the hard copy really is not necessary, and coupled with the rising cost of postage, we have decided to implement an email-only-for-test-results policy beginning April 1 unless a client does not have an email address. Clients who do not have email addresses will continue to receive a U.S. mail copy.

Reminder: Label Those Fecal Samples
You've received your sample collection kit (see the new photo of our testing kit) from Horsemen's Laboratory, and now you're ready to head to the barn to collect a fecal sample from your horse for an egg count. But before you go, sit down with pen or marker and completely fill out the information on the sample bag and card. Provide your horse's name and contact information for yourself, including phone number and email address. Also place a return address on the envelope.
Horsemen's Laboratory occasionally receives unidentified samples. Even if you are already a client or have prepaid for multiple samples, you must include identifying information for yourself and your horse each time you send a sample. Otherwise, Horsemen's Laboratory will not know which horse the sample belongs to if you have more than one horse, who the owner is, or where to send the results. .
