Worm of the Month: Dewormers - Praziquantel
'Greetings, Human' - A Message From The Worms
Worm of the Month
We're continuing our series of 'Worm of the Month' articles about deworming medications.

This month:
Dewormers -
Praziquantel

Typically combined with ivermectin in a blended dewormer, praziquantel is generally considered a safe and effective means of treating tapeworms in horses. While they haven't been on the radar long in terms of parasites to be concerned about, tapeworms can actually cause severe intestinal and colic issues, and the tapeworm host is a mite commonly found in enormous quantities on the healthiest of pastures.

Greetings!

Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year to you and yours! Welcome to our late-December issue of Worm Control News, from Horsemen's Laboratory.

This month we're reporting on the just-launched 'Greetings, Human' dewormer education campaign from Merial - they're betting that a little humor will make the dewormer medicine go down, just a little less often. And we're continuing our Dewormer Series in the Worm of the Month section; this month it's praziquantel.

As mentioned last month, we'll be having a price increase effective February, 2011; full details are in the Customer Alert below.

While holiday shopping is wrapped up for the year, remember that our Horsemen's Lab gift certificates can be ordered in any dollar amount throughout the year, as gifts for those with horses to care for.

As always, if there's anything we can do to help in your equine worm control program, please call us at 800-544-0599, or email us at [email protected].

Thank you, and we wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2011!

Sincerely,
John W. Byrd, DVM

Customer Alert - 2011 Price Increase

Price increases are an inevitable cost of doing business. We've tried to hold off as long as we could, but effective February 1, 2011, the cost of our samples, which includes the collection kit, postage, processing, and support, will increase slightly.

A large part of the reason for the increase is postage. If you'd like to help us keep our costs down, you can do so by mailing more than one sample in an envelope when you have more than one horse due at the same time. By mailing multiple samples per envelope, it can save us up to 50% on postage.

Our new prices will be:
One sample: $18
Two to five samples: $15 each
Six or more samples: $13 each

** As a courtesy to our loyal customers, any sample kits purchased prior to February 1st will remain 'on account' under the purchaser's name.

We appreciate your business...thank you for your understanding and support.

'Greetings, Human' - A Message From The Worms

Equine parasite resistance continues to be a hot topic in the equestrian media and in online forums, as horse owners and stable managers sort out how to implement the new deworming guidelines into their own worm control programs. Now one of the equine health 'heavy-hitters' has put a substantial effort into helping everyone 'get with the 'new' program.'
