Worm of the Month
This month kicks off a
series of 'Worm of the Month' articles about deworming medications. This month:
Dewormers - Ivermectin
Horse owners and
veterinarians are familiar with ivermectin as a commonly used equine dewormer,
one that was introduced in the mid-1980s and is now widely available over the
counter as well as through online resources. It's a broad-spectrum
anti-parasitic medication used in equine parasite control programs, but did you
know it's also used for cats, dogs, birds, and even humans?

Greetings!
Welcome to our July issue of Worm Control News, from Horsemen's Laboratory.
This month,
we're looking at how to use fecal sample testing to assess the equine parasites
in your horse's environment, and some interesting 'shedding' statistics pulled
from our computer database.
We're also starting a 'Dewormer Series' under our
Worm of the Month section, to help you better understand the different dewormer
classes and how they work; this month, we're looking at ivermectin.
As always, if there's anything we can do to help in your equine worm
control program, please call or email us at hlab@horsemenslab.com. We hope you enjoy reading this issue!
Sincerely,
John W. Byrd, DVM

What 'Before' and 'After' Testing Reveals About Parasite Resistance
Misconceptions
exist about how to use fecal egg count (FEC) testing. At Horsemen's Laboratory,
helping horse owners understand the most effective way to use FECs is part of
our mission; as such, we're constantly on the lookout for new information and
research we can share with our customers.
Running one fecal sample
test will let us know if your horse has worms, and how many parasite eggs he's
'shedding' into the environment, but it takes a follow-up test after deworming
to get the whole picture. Here's why....

About H-Lab
This
section of the newsletter will have introductions to the people at H-Lab, explanations of
what we do behind the scenes, and highlights about actual customers and their worm
control strategies
This month:
What Our Data Shows About 'Shedding'
With all
the focus on revamping worm control programs based on a particular horse's
parasite egg 'shedding' status, we decided to review our records to see how egg
shedding statistics might have changed in the years since Horseman's Laboratory
opened for business in 1992. We selected several years at random, looking at the
percentages of low, medium, and high shedders in those horses testing positive
for strongyles, to see if there have been fluctuations. Here are the results of
our review.
