Worm of the Month
In this section, we'll feature an equine parasite each month, with information on the parasite's life cycle and the health consequences for horses.

This month:
Large Strongyles

Last month we looked at small strongyles; this month is about their larger relatives, the Strongylinae, also known as large strongyles or large bloodworms.

Historically, large strongyles have been the most dreaded and feared of parasites, due to the extreme health issues t
hey can cause in a horse, including death.

On Fecal Egg Counts

Misconceptions exist about how to use fecal egg count (FEC) testing. At Horsemen's Laboratory, helping horse owners understand the most effective way to use FECs is part of our mission; as such, we're constantly on the lookout for new information and research we can share with our customers.

A July, 2009, EquIDblog post by University of Guelph's Dr. Scott Weese refers to an 'often overlooked' facet of parasite control, the fecal egg count.

About Horsemen's Lab

In this section of Worm Control News we'll introduce you to the people at H-Lab, explain what we do behind the scenes, and highlight actual customers and their worm control strategies.

Born and raised in Illinois, Dr. John Byrd has been a horseman nearly his entire life. "I got my first pony when I entered grade school. He was unbroken, and I trained him with my dad's help," says Dr. Byrd. "We always lived in rural areas, so up through high school I rode after school and every weekend with the rest of the neighbor kids."

He spent so much time in the saddle that he thought a horse training career was ahead of him, until he met his future wife. "Becky's mom said she couldn't marry anyone who didn't go to college, so that ultimatum, combined with advice from someone I respected, pointed me to veterinary school," he says.

Buy 6, Get 1 Free!
Save $$$ - When you pre-pay for 6 (or more) fecal sample tests by January 1, 2010, you'll get one test free!*

Whether you have one horse or many, buying in bulk saves money:
1 fecal sample = $15 per sample
2-5 fecal samples = $13 per sample
6+ fecal samples = $11 per sample
And now, you'll get an extra bonus - a free test! - when you buy at least six.

How It Works:
A 'credit' for the number of tests purchased (plus any free tests) goes onto your account in our records. We'll send you a collection kit either when your horse is due to be tested, after he has a positive result that requires testing after deworming, or any time you request one, so there's no need to store collection kits and wonder why you can't find one when you need one. We'll always email you a reminder (or send you a collection kit, if you've paid in advance) when it's time for a test!
