Greetings Injury Community:

 

We are well into spring and summer is around the corner! We have had a fun-filled calendar of events and hope you will join us for the remaining activities in the school year. We are especially proud of the recent Safe Communities designation that was officially awarded to Emory University on Tuesday, April 24th by the National Safety Council. Thank you all for your continued support and participation - this is Injury Prevention! 

Meeting Highlights

Quarterly Meeting: April 19, 2012  

  • Over 40 colleagues in attendance!   
  • Partner Update: Kelley Mautz and Dr. Julie Haarbauer-Krupa from the Brain and Spinal Injury Trust Fund Commission spoke about their mission of serving Georgians with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Kelley discussed the recommendations from an outcome and process evaluation completed for the Prevention and Preschool Working Groups. They also talked about the great work of the Georgia Concussion Coalition and encouraged attendees to join a committee or working group.  
  • Faculty Update: Dr. David Wright, Director of Emergency Neurosciences in Emory's Department of Emergency Medicine, spoke about several of the Neuroscience research trials taking place at Emory and throughout the NETT Network. Dr. Wright's ProTECT III study is a phase 3 multi-center, national trial examining the use of progesterone to treat moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.   
  • Technical Assistance: New technical assistance offering - Jake Aull, from Georgia State University and Zen Fires Marketing, spoke to us about his Social Media Marketing course for undergraduates at GSU. His students partner with local organizations to conduct a competitive web analysis and give recommendations on how to optimize your social media presence.  
Safe Communities Update
Emory is designated a Safe Community!!!!!!
Emory Receives Safe Community AwardTuesday, April 24th 2012
Emory University became the 2nd academic institution and 20th community in the U.S. to be recognized as an International Safe Community through the National Safety Council. After a 2-year application process and a recent site visit in March, the Emory Safety Alliance is proud to achieve this designation on behalf of the University!!!!!

Congratulations to Deb Houry for her new position as University Senate President Elect!!! She is also the chair of the Subcommittee on Safety and Security which reports on the activities of the Emory Safety Alliance to the University. We are very proud of Deb's accomplishment and look forward to her leadership of the University Senate!

  • Brown Bag Lecture Series: The Brown Bag lunchtime discussions continue to be a success! We have had 3 lectures so far this year, with the addition of a Social Media presentation, and will soon have our 4th this Thursday, 5/3/12. Please join us for a lecture on "Readiness for Transition to Adulthood in Teens with Acquired Brain Injury" presented by Dr. Julie Haarbauer-Krupa.   • Summer Student Scholarship Program: Thank you to all the applicants for their recent submissions; we had fantastic students and projects to choose from! Congratulations to Amanda Garcia-Williams (Emory), Derek Jaworski (Georgia State University), Jackson Bunch (University of Georgia), Danielle Fincher (Emory), and Rosalyn Schroeder (Emory) - this year's scholarship recipients!!!!  
  • Mentorship Program: We are currently re-vamping our Faculty Mentorship Program modeling it after "Mentor Emory" through Emory's Learning Services. The next cohort will be chosen this fall and we plan to match up to 8 pairs! Be part of a structured mentorship program with formal goal setting and great opportunities for professional growth! Faculty are encouraged to sign up online and if you have a mentor or mentee in mind, please let us know.
  • Practicum Program: This spring ECIC funded 6 MPH graduate student interns to work on injury-related projects. These students have gained valuable experience working in the public health field at the following organizations: the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Trust Fund Commission, Safe Kids Georgia, Shepherd Center, Partnership Against Domestic Violence, CHOA's Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children, and the Emory Center for Injury Control.   
  • Practitioner Training Program: In March we hosted our 2nd Practitioner Training Program, the "Skill-based Public Health Training Program for Injury Prevention". The 47 participants attended a 3-day training focused on grant writing, program evaluation, and policy. The first day kicked-off with lectures on intimate partner violence and youth violence led by experts in the field. Thank you to all the participants and trainers!

  • Pilot Grant Program: The Pilot Grant Program has become quite competitive as the number of applications has dramatically increased. The 2012 Pilot Grantees began their projects in February and we are excited about the range of disciplines, topics, and organizational affiliations they represent. Congratulations to this year's grantees:  Anitha Mathew, MD (Emory); Anna Edwards-Gaura, PhD (Georgia State University); Barbara Rothbaum, PhD (Emory); Jenelle Shanley, PhD (Georgia State University); Jennifer McMahon-Howard, PhD (Kennesaw State University); Laura Salazar, PhD (Georgia State University); Madeleine Hackney, PhD (Emory); Pamela Orpinas, PhD (University of Georgia); Robert Stephenson, PhD (Emory); and Ronald Seel, PhD (Shepherd Center). 
  • WestJEM: We received a record number of manuscript submissions in January for the next special issue of WestJEM, coming out mid-June! Meanwhile, if you are looking for ideas for publishing your manuscripts, please look at the list of journals that is posted on our website that regularly publish manuscripts in injury and violence prevention - journals for injury research
  • Injury Dataset Workshop II: Our 2nd Injury Dataset Workshop took place April 25th in collaboration with Georgia's Department of Public Health.
    Thank you to our presenters: Rana Bayakly, Viani Ramirez-Irizarry, David Austin, and Denise Yeager for the valuable information on WISQARS (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System), NVDRS (National Violent Death Reporting System), GVDRS (Georgia Violent Death Reporting System), and OASIS (Online Analytical Statistical Information System). 
  • Translational Research Workshop: Register today for the upcoming Translational Research Workshop led by Dr. Jim Emshoff on May 17th from 9am - 12pm (see above). This is another great interactive opportunity to learn more about translational research. Please be sure to RSVP to Lee by May 11th. 
  • Economic Evaluation Research Workshop: Save-the-date for this workshop coming up in the summer. Dr. Phaedra Corso from the University of Georgia will be facilitating this workshop on June 7th. Please stay tuned for more information.    
  • Conferences: To showcase the work underway by ECIC and affiliated faculty we have recently presented at the Georgia Public Health Association Annual Meeting (April 12th) and will present at the Safe States Alliance Meeting (May 3rd) and the American Society of Criminology Annual Meeting in November.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership 

  • 2012 - 2017 Strategic Plan: Dr. Kevin Harvey, Hubert Humphrey Fellow at Emory's School of Public Health, has been working with MAVPP members on a new strategic plan. Dr. Harvey presented the strategic plan at the last member meeting. 
  • Fundraising Initiative: MAVPP has created a Regional Collaborative Fundraising Initiative aimed at providing the proposed MAVPP administration and its participants with monetary and other resources needed to conduct high quality research and other violence prevention services.  
  • Uptown Comedy Corner: Comedian Larry D. Veal is offering his services pro-bono to MAVPP and will host a fundraising event every Monday evening at the Uptown Comedy Corner.   
  • Kingian Non-Violence: MAVPP adopted the Kingian Nonviolence philosophy in the Peace Plan as a recommended innovative capacity-building training approach.

Georgia's Department of Public Health, Office of Injury Prevention 

  • Policy Update: The Injury Advisory Committee will continue to have discussions around policy in future meetings. ECIC will have those policy updates listed on their Georgia Policy News tab online.   
  • New Staff: Please welcome our new program consultant, Wende Parker, who recently joined the Department of Public Health, Office of Injury Prevention. She has an extensive work history and past experience working with the State of Georgia sections including the Department of Public Health (Cobb and Douglas) and the Office of the Child Advocate, Child Fatality Review Division.
