Education & Training
  • Brown Bag Lecture Series: The first session was October 20th. We  heard from our colleagues Arleymah Raheem and Carri Cottengim from the Office of the Child Advocate on the "Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) Risk Factors and Prevention Opportunities" Act.  To hear their presentation please visit our website. Please mark your calendar for our next Brown Bag scheduled for January 20th, 2012. Our featured speaker is Dr. Muazzam Nasrullah from the CDC who will be discussing "The Epidemiological Patterns of Honor Killings of Women in Pakistan". Our Brown bag lectures are also filled for March and May. Please refer to our website for more information.
  • Summer Scholarships: Our 3 summer scholarship students presented; 2 in person and 1 virtually. After the presentations, a certificate of completion was given to the presenters along with a photo op with the Center Director and Associate Director for Education & Training. Their presentations were excellent and we encourage more students to apply this spring.
  • Mentorship Program: We hope to jumpstart the Mentorship Program this year! Please come to our Holiday Networking Mixer to sign up as a mentor or mentee. There will be a sign up sheet available and we look forward to your participation.

Research
  • Pilot Grant Program: We are very excited about the interest in the ECIC Pilot Grant Program and look forward to the review panels to be held in early December.
  • WestJEM: Also, we hope you have seen our call for papers to the third special issue in WestJEM. Manuscripts are due on January 17, 2012. The thematic focus of the issue is "Injury Disparities and Vulnerable Populations" although, we will consider other injury topics, pending space and number of submissions. We are very pleased with our collaboration with the editors at WestJEM who have truly facilitated and supported our special issues. Please let us know if you have manuscript topics for this special issue or are interested in serving as a reviewer.
  • Scientific Oversight Committee:  The Scientific Oversight Committee met in October. Again, we thank our committee members for their enthusiasm and commitment and for their input on the strategic direction of the ECIC.  The committee provided thoughtful and constructive guidance for how we can increase our visibility through presentations and publications. We are considering putting together thematic panels at scientific meetings (e.g., APHA) and potentially also encouraging special issues for other journals. We are also exploring ways to further facilitate grant applications and submissions in support of the ECIC priority areas.  The committee provided some intriguing ideas, such as hosting specific workshops and also hosting grant ideas and proposal discussion meetings where researchers can exchange ideas and propose revisions to previously rejected grants. Please let us know if you have ideas for how we may structure workshops or meetings to enable collaboration and submission of new grant proposals for external funding.
  • Dataset Workshop: The Injury Data Workshop (part 1) was held in September. It was a very informative day as we learned more about the datasets available to us in Georgia. We thank our colleagues at the Georgia Department of Public Health for taking the time to guide us through the datasets and resources that they have. If you missed it, the podcasts are available on our website. We are looking for input on another workshop, tentatively to be held in the spring. If you have data needs or ideas, please let us know.
  • Reminder: Last but not least, for those who have received funds from the ECIC (directly or indirectly) and are presenting or publishing the findings, please cite the grant as follows: Supported by the Emory Center for Injury Control, CDC Injury Control Research Center Grant #5R49CE001494
