Greetings Injury Community:

Fall is here and we're starting the third year of our Center Grant. Let me first start by thanking all of you who completed our ECIC survey this summer. Your responses were incredibly helpful and constructive and have guided our planning efforts. We have had an exciting couple of months planning workshops and events for you. Please read our updates below and mark your calendars!

Meeting Highlights

Quarterly Meeting: Sept. 1st 2011

  • Over 60 colleagues in attendance! It was a great turnout and wonderful to see everyone refreshed after the summer break.
  • This year's Pilot Grant Program was announced. With increased funding from Georgia's Division of Maternal & Child Health, we are able to fund more projects! Proposals are due November 15th and 2 information sessions are coming up - bring your questions and consider applying for a grant.
  • ECIC's 2nd WestJEM issue came out this July - we are now preparing for the next issue. Submissions are due in January with a focus on injury disparities and vulnerable populations. If you are interested in being a reviewer, don't hesitate to contact us.
  • Attend ECIC's 1st Dataset Workshop - Sept. 29th from 10 - 4pm. Participants will hear from Department of Public Health staff about several datasets available in Georgia and how to access them for secondary analyses. Don't let this great data go to waste - use it to inform future programs in injury prevention - Bridge Science to Practice!
  • Thank you to all who requested student support! ECIC was able to choose 4 projects and will be matching MPH-level students with injury organizations for this fall semester.
  • Last month's Practitioner Training Program was a success!!!! Thank you to everyone who took part and made the most of this wonderful learning opportunity. Follow-up sessions will continue this fall and our next training program is planned for spring 2012 focusing on youth violence and intimate partner violence.
  • ECIC's Brown Bag Lecture Series begins again! Don't miss the first lecture October 20th on Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID). Learn about the risk factors that affect our youngest in Georgia.
  • The Emory Safety Alliance - a group formed to address safety and injury prevention for the University - is making great progress on the Safe Communities application. Our hope is to designate Emory University as a "Safe Community" by spring 2012.
  • Congratulations to Alan Goldman (Division of Aging Services, GA Dept of Public Health) who is retiring after 35 years!
Education & Training
  • Brown Bag Lecture Series: The brown bag lectures continue to be a successful part of the ECIC. As in years past, we anticipate 4 sessions in line with our quarterly series. The first session is on October 20th from 12 - 1pm at the Grady Campus in FOB room 101. We will hear from our partners from the Office of the Child Advocate on "Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID) Risk Factors and Prevention Opportunities".  This is an opportune time to learn about Georgia's Child Fatality Review and the work being done to improve investigation, reporting, and review of unexplained infant deaths.  Based on your feedback, the date and times of the brown bag lectures are flexible and will be dependent on the availability of our speakers. We have one more date remaining for the academic year and we urge you to contact us if interested (May 2012). This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase and present your work in the field of injury prevention and control.
  • Practitioner Training ProgramWe offered our first Practitioner Training this summer with 2 content areas; Motor Vehicle Collisions presented by Bob Dallas and Unintentional Poisoning presented by Gaylord Lopez. The 3 skill-based tracks included Policy, Grant Writing and Program Evaluation. There were 51 participants including ECIC members from the state health department, county health departments, Safe Kids coalitions, community-based organizations, rehabilitation centers, Emory University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The evaluations noted the training program was well-received with over 90% of respondents agreeing that the course content was relevant to their work and 100% of respondents saying they would recommend the course to a co-worker.
  • Practicum Program: There were several applications submitted with 4 projects selected that will receive 10 weeks of student support.  We are delighted with the interest shown in the practicum program.
  • Mentorship Program: We had an excellent year with our Mentorship program and hope there is enough interest to continue the program. We need engaged faculty who want to mentor and be mentored. If you are interested, please contact us.

Research
  • Dataset Workshop: We are delighted to announce the upcoming Data Workshop to be held on September 29th, 10AM - 4PM. Hosted in collaboration with Georgia's Department of Public Health, this workshop will be a wonderful opportunity for researchers to know more about the datasets that are available in Georgia and how to access them. See below for more details. There will also be small grants available for secondary analyses of these datasets and priority will be given to workshop attendees.
  • Pilot Grant ProgramThe call for our annual Faculty Pilot Grant Program has also been released. Proposals are due November 15th.  We have made a few minor changes to the criteria so please take a look at the options and let us know if you have questions. We have also scheduled 2 one-hour information sessions (Sept. 22nd from 2 - 3pm in room 103 and Oct 19th from 2 - 3pm in room 123, both in Emory's Faculty Office Building) to help potential investigators and answer questions that you may have about the criteria, proposal preparation, and finding collaborators.
  • WestJEM: If you have been a grantee in the Faculty Pilot Grant or have worked on other research projects or analyses related to Injury Disparities and Vulnerable Populations, please consider submitting a manuscript to our third special journal issue in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine www.westjem.org. The two previously published issues are available on our website for you to download. The deadline for manuscript submission is January 17, 2012. We are always looking for reviewers so please let us know if you are interested in serving in that role.
  • ConferencesAnother strategy for promoting and disseminating our ECIC affiliated research could be through panel presentations at national conferences (e.g., the American Society of Criminology, the Society for Prevention Research, the American Public Health Association). We are eager to receive your ideas for topics and potential conferences and also to work with you in case you would like to chair and organize such a thematic panel. As always, please share your ideas with us for how we can better promote your research, help with finding external funds, and collaborate in other ways. Please remember and feel free to use the many services we have in place to help you develop your research (i.e., literature reviews, translational research, costs, etc).

Community Outreach

The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP)

Nonviolence Movement: The partnership between the King Center and the Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP) formalized on August 16, 2011. This occurred at the press conference for the 21st Century Nonviolence Movement. Violence prevention stakeholders are working together toward obtaining the 100,000 pledges of support for the Peace Plan.  Everyone is welcome to be a part of this effort.  Anyone who wishes to be a part of the movement can support the Peace Plan online by entering the following link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/thepeaceplan/.

With the youth as its core, the Peace Plan is serving as the roadmap for guiding the development of youth services in the Atlanta Region.

Peace Week: Wednesday, September 7, 2011 John Eaves, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, and Fulton County Housing & Human Services/Office of Children and Youth proclaimed  September 17 - 24 as "Peace Week" in Fulton County. The Peace Week activities were kicked off on Sept. 17th with a celebration at the Fulton County Government Center. Public service announcements are slated to saturate the air waves with a message of peace regarding this series of events.

Peace Plan Video: Young people from the Rock of Escape faith-based organization created a digital video depiction of the Peace Plan.  This youth-directed video illustrates vital parts of the Plan and works toward fostering community engagement for violence prevention.  Rock of Escape program organizers expect to work with other members of MAVPP to disseminate this video throughout the year.  The purpose will be to encourage other Peace Plan supporters and youth groups, locally and perhaps nationally, to develop their own violence prevention activities based upon programs that are known to work.  Once again, the youth will be a central part of the violence prevention effort originating in Atlanta through the 21st Century Nonviolence Movement. Watch the VIDEO here.

Core Funding: The Georgia Department of Public Health, Office of Injury Prevention was awarded CDC Core VIPP funding for the next 5 years.  The good news is that this funding will enable work to continue with our partners in the Division of Aging Services.

Collaboration: Based on the outstanding experience at the ECIC hosted training,  the Office of Injury Prevention would like pair up with researchers on quasi experimental design projects to rigorously evaluate on-going work and inform future research in injury prevention.

Fall Prevention: Join the Office of Injury Prevention and the Division of Aging Services for Fall Prevention Awareness Day, Friday September 23, 2011 10 - 2pm in the lobby of the 2 Peachtree Street building.

Practitioner Training Program

Grant Writing track with trainer Chataun Denis

August 15 - 18th 2011

ECIC's first Practitioner Training Program was a success!

Thank you to our participants and excellent trainers for making this a wonderful learning opportunity for us all. Tom Chapel, CDC's Chief Evaluation Officer led the Program Evaluation track, Chataun Denis, Chief Consultant, Trainer and Founder for Grant Source led the Grant Writing track, Gloria Latimer and Kitty Jerome from Directors of Health Promotion and Education led the Policy track - all excellent trainers!

Participants increased their knowledge about Motor Vehicle Collisions and Poisoning in Georgia while gaining practical skills in either Grant Writing, Program Evaluation, or Policy. The trainers will host 2 coaching sessions (end of Sept and Oct) to give further guidance to the participants and help them apply their knowledge to their current work in injury prevention.

A special thanks to Safe Kids Georgia and the Rollins School of Public Health for your support!
