March Brown Bag:

Elder Mistreatment

Featured Mentorship Pair:

Dr. Brain Payne & Dr. Sheryl Strasser

Issue: #8   April 2011

Greetings Injury Community:

Spring is here!!!! ECIC kicked - off the season with a fantastic lecture from Dr. Jackson Katz, a leader in the field of gender violence prevention. Katz spoke about the bystander approach and his strategies to reach out to young men to help prevent men's violence against women. With media clips and discussion around the language used in our culture, Katz hit home the message of men taking responsibility for violence.

As we move into summer and school vacation, please note the Center is still active and we'll have opportunities for you to stay engaged. A Database Workshop is coming up soon, along with a skill-based Training Program for injury prevention practitioners focused on motor vehicle collisions and poisoning. Stay tuned!

Education & Training
  • Brown Bags & Mentorship: We had an excellent Brown Bag March 17th, presented by our Mentor/Mentee pair of the year Drs Brian Payne and Sheryl Strasser (shown on the left). They shared with the group their research on Elder Mistreatment as well as the keys to successful mentoring relationships. We celebrated our mentorship program by having a reception after the Brown Bag. We are interested in continuing with our Brown Bags and need your help. Please contact us if you have an area of research you would like to present to our group.
  • Certificate Program: We are working on creating a certificate program in Injury & Violence Prevention at the Rollins School of Public Health. The courses have been identified as well as interest gauged. Stay tuned for continued updates.
  • Summer Scholarship Program: We received 7 applications for our summer scholarships which were reviewed by our selection committee. We are proud of this exciting opportunity as we continue to support our next generation of injury scholars.
  •  Training Program: We are delighted to launch a three and a half day training program in August of this year to our injury prevention practitioners. If you are seeking additional skills and resources in grant writing, program evaluation, or injury policy, please to attend. Research
  • WestJEM: We are thrilled to report that our efforts on the WestJEM special issue is nearly complete and we have an intriguing and diverse set of papers that will be included in the publication. Thank you again to all our authors and reviewers for working with our very tight timeline. We are very pleased with our collaboration with the editors at WestJEM who have truly facilitated and supported this collaboration. Please stay tuned for updates on the special issue soon. We hope to have the journal in print and accessible on the web by June!
  • Scientific Oversight Committee: The Scientific Oversight Committee met March 10th. We thank our committee members for their enthusiasm and commitment and for their input on the strategic direction of the ECIC. The committee provided thoughtful and constructive guidance for how we can better emphasize translation (a thematic focus area for the ECIC) in our efforts. In response to the suggestions made, we are looking into revising our call for seed grant proposals to make translational research even more strongly emphasized (expect to see the call for applications for seed grants by late summer).  Moreover, we also plan to add more information to the website to further provide some clarity regarding translational research. We are seeking new ways to showcase the research underway by researchers affiliated with the ECIC and to work with policy makers and corporate partners as appropriate.
  • Database Workshop: The data-users workshop we mentioned at the previous quarterly meeting is still being planned. We should have more details about this workshop shortly.
  • Evaluation Survey: Last but not least, we are planning to send out a survey to gather some data on activities underway by our affiliated members and faculty to help us evaluate our progress and what we can improve upon. We appreciate your assistance to help us make note of your successes and how we can support the continued success for the ECIC and to identify what we can do to serve you better.

Community Outreach

The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP)

  • New Chapter: The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP) members traveled to Macon where they experienced a highly successful exchange of information regarding ways to start another violence prevention chapter in Macon, GA.
  • Violence Prevention Movement: The MAVPP partners are working towards creating a violence prevention movement based in Atlanta similar to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.  Participants who are working to promote science-based and innovative programs and want to become national leaders in the regional coordination of comprehensive, community-based violence prevention services.  Using the Peace Plan as a corner, they will employ a public heath ecological approach in this initiative with a social marketing youth perspective serving as an integral part of the regional violence prevention strategy.
  • MLK Memorial: The partners are also considering putting together a bus convoy to Washington, DC for the unveiling of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the national mall. They will work towards garnering support for the Peace Plan through this delegation, and they will build into the event tangible outcome-oriented activities that work in concert with the violence prevention needs of the Atlanta region.
  • Peace Plan: The high definition edited video coverage of the regional violence prevention breakfast, forum, and awards ceremony for the MAVPP on December 10, 2010 is complete.  The purpose of the event was to unveil the Peace Plan.  The partners are considering showcasing this coverage as part of a public debut of MAVPP activities.

GA Policy Update
The ECIC has been tracking the current Injury Policy Legislation taking place in Georgia. Now that the 2011 legislative session has adjourned, we would like to update you on the most successful legislation related to injury topics.
  •  Senate Bill 88 - PASSED, awaiting Gov. Deal's signature: Motor Vehicles; Increase the Age Requirements for Use of Child Restraint System.   If enacted, this law will amend Georgia law to require drivers transporting children under 8 years of age (increased from age 6) to use a child passenger restraining system appropriate for the child's height and weight. It will also require that these children ride in the rear seat.
  • Senate Bill 76 - PASSED, awaiting Gov. Deal's signature: Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission; Revise Provisions; Uncompensated Trauma Care. If enacted, this law would amend a code section such that EMS transports of uninsured trauma patients who qualify for reimbursement by funds from the GTCNC can occur even if those patients are not taken to trauma centers initially.
  • See the outcomes of other injury-related legislative efforts (Teen Dating Violence, Bicycle Safety, Firearms, Lead Poisoning, and School Bus Safety) on our Policy Page
