Training & Education

Greetings Colleagues:

What a wonderful year for the ECIC in training and education.  To sum up our achievements for the year, I have outlined 3 key areas of engagement.

  •  Brown Bag Series - We have had 3 Brown Bag discussions over the last year, with our final Lecture scheduled for May 20th.  Our featured speaker will be Dr. Herndon Murray from the Shepherd Center.  He will discuss his work with adolescent spinal cord injury patients.  Lunch will be provided by the ECIC, so please come and share in the discussion. We will resume our Brown Bag discussions in the fall and welcome you to share your research and/or area of expertise. Send me an email if you are interested: sheron@emory.edu
  • Mentorship Program - We had our mentorship luncheon kick-off on March 3rd. There are 9 mentor/mentee pairs representing a diversity of schools including GSU, Emory, Morehouse, Clayton State and Spelman. We are excited about the prospects of the program and hope to see fruitful outcomes from the mentoring relationships. Please visit the ECIC website tab for "mentoring" to access readings and information on the mentoring program.
  • Concentration/Certificate Process - We are excited about the prospects of creating a concentration/certificate in Injury Control and Prevention. Students, particularly in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory, have expressed a need for a concentration in injury control. We plan to meet with leaders in Behavioral Science and Health Education at Rollins to facilitate this process. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your enthusiasm in the educational activities of the ECIC. As we approach the summer months, we wish you a safe and joyous time with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sheryl Heron
Associate Director of Training & Education

Research

We are very excited about the progress made by the ECIC funded research projects. During the spring semester the steering committee has received updates and heard presentations from all of the Principal Investigators about the status of their research projects that were funded as part of the center grant. It is clear that all of our Principal Investigators are diligently working to implement their projects and that all of the projects are on track to achieve their goals. This is truly amazing and we are eagerly awaiting to learn more about the findings of these exciting research projects.
  • The funded seed grant projects are also getting started (or will be shortly) and we look forward to learning more about these projects and what we can do to support them. Again, we are thrilled to have such an exciting diversity of projects, many of which target specific and vulnerable populations. Again, we look forward to learning of the outcomes of these research projects as well as assisting with finding future funding opportunities, where applicable.
  • The submission deadline for the next call for proposals for the seed grant projects will be November, 2010. We will send out the official announcement within the next couple of months. But, it is not too early to start thinking about proposals, projects or possible collaborations. Please contact us if you are looking for collaborators or need a consultation on how a translational research component may be added to your existing project. Dr. Jim Emshoff has significant expertise in this area and is available to consult on issues of translation and implementation to promote and strengthen this thematic area for ECIC affiliated faculty and researchers conducting injury and violence-related research.
  • The Scientific Oversight Committee met last week and discussed our thematic topics (vulnerable populations and translational research), strategic opportunities and priorities. One specific recommendation was made to expand the seed grant proposals to include an option of adding a translational research component to an existing project. This recommendation will be adopted and incorporated in the call for proposals. Moreover, as a strategy to more deliberately showcase our research and thematic areas, a subcommittee was initiated to explore the possibility of sponsoring thematic symposiums or special journal issues to promote and disseminate the projects conducted by researchers affiliated with the ECIC. Dr. Volkan Topalli will chair this committee. We look forward to hearing more about the ideas and recommendations this committee will provide for how we may be able to foster interdisciplinary collaborations and showcasing our research through symposiums and thematic journal issues.

Outreach

The Metropolitan Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP)

  • MAVPP successfully conducted a nonviolent music contest audition on March 19that the King Center.  Contest officials will announce the finalist later this month (April, 2010).  At least ten of the top performing youth will participate in a professional development workshop with Atlanta's Resource for Entertainment and Arts (AREA), Inc. studios and training center.  Training areas will include topics like use of professional studio equipment, business plan development and marketing, the essence of science-based nonviolent music, public relations, and business acumen.
  • MAVPP partners decided to limit the official membership in the organization to individuals who are current in their dues and have a signed memorandum of agreement on file.  Ms. Carlynn Pearson is sending membership dues invoices via e-mail on behalf of the Mr. Mikhail Abdulbaaqee, MAVPP Treasurer.
  • Partner organizations are working together to support Ms. Betty Maddox in conducting a teen dating violence prevention workshop called Violence Has No Face.
  • MAVPP may be growing into a larger organization that addresses the overlap between inmates returning to the community and violence (e.g., family, gang, and street etc.).  The partners will address this recommendation to create a sub-partnership in the April, 2010, monthly meeting at Visions Unlimited.
  • MAVPP's Web Page is projected to launch within the next two weeks through the Morehouse School of Medicine web page.  The page will list partners in good standing.

Georgia Department of Community Health
Injury Prevention Program
  • Carol Koplan announced that 100 people representing diverse teams from 29 Georgia's colleges would be arriving in Atlanta the following week for a conference that takes a true Public Health approach to suicide prevention. In addition to scheduled training and meetings, activities include Suicide Day at the Capitol and a fundraiser at Eddie's Attic.
  • Bob Geller shared news of an increase in the number of medical professionals from outside the U.S. who are coming to the Georgia Poison Center for training. These individuals are supported by grants from their home countries. Each will return home and use what they've learned to initiate or expand poison control awareness and response programs in their respective countries.
  • Rhonda Page facilitated a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis to gather information about the IPP from GIPAC members. The feedback generated during this exercise will contribute to the development of a new Strategic Plan for the IPP.
