Training & Education
Greetings:

As we formulate our Training & Education Committee, I ask you to send me an email to work on this subcommittee. We have a few initiatives and welcome input by members of ECIC. The goal is to be multidisciplinary and represented across schools. The educational updates for November/ December are below:
  • Brown Bag Lecture Series
Our first Brown Bag on Elder Maltreatment by Dr. Brian Payne was a wonderful opportunity for members of the ECIC to gather and learn about Dr. Payne's research on Elder Mistreatment. Dr. Payne is Chair and Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Georgia State University. His discussion, entitled "The Young Get Older and the Older Get Victimized" examined the problems determining the extent of elder mistreatment as well as the types of mistreatment the elderly endure.  Dr. Payne's research includes a focus on risk factors for victimization over the life course to strategies for promoting collaboration.

Our next Brown Bag lecture is December 10th at 12pm on GRADY campus in FOB 101. It is a special opportunity for ECIC to collaborate with Emory's Vulnerability Studies and Global Health Law & Policy Projects. The purpose of the discussion is to bring together Emory's Main Campus with Grady and our downtown partners. There will be several informal presentations by members of ECIC who work with vulnerable populations at Grady. Please email me and Natasha if you would like to present your work. RSVP's by Dec 7th are requested as lunch will be provided.
  • Mentor/Mentee Program
We have 18 people signed up to be either a faculty Mentor or Mentee. This is a great start as we gear up for our kick-off luncheon on February 24th at 12 noon. If you are interested in serving as a Mentor or Mentee, we are still accepting faculty to sign up. Our hope is the program will be across disciplines and across schools.  The deadline to sign up is January 15th. We will send out the faculty pairings prior to the kick-off luncheon.
  • Certificate Program
We have researched the classes at various institutions that would qualify for the certificate program either on the undergraduate or the master level. We still need ECIC members to work with us to create this program. We are seeking expertise from faculty at area universities to bring the Certification program to fruition.

I wish you and your family a safe and wonderful Holiday Season and an even better New Year.

Dr. Sheryl L. Heron
ECIC Associate Director for Training & Education

Research

Submit your proposals this Sunday, November 15th!!!

  • ECIC Faculty Seed Grant Program
The ECIC has created a multi-disciplinary Faculty Seed Grant Program to facilitate and promote innovative, preliminary, and interdisciplinary research activities to yield future high-impact injury prevention research. The four categories of grants (described below) are designed to provide incentives and support for researchers to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and community members on projects that can lead to larger grant proposals related to violence and unintentional injury prevention or that support the preparation of a larger grant proposal. The Seed grants range in amounts but all reflect total costs (covering both direct and indirect costs, where applicable) for projects lasting one year or less.

The purpose of the program is to support pilot studies, data collection, secondary analyses, and other research activities that are aligned with the CDC's Injury Research Agenda, and that will likely result in the future submission of a larger grant proposal. In particular, priority areas for the Seed Grant Program pertain to research that involves vulnerable populations or aspects of research translation.
  • Proposal Categories
One-year Pilot Grants (up to $20,000) - One to three awards per
year will be provided to support pilot data collection and application
for large grants.

Grant Application Awards ($5,000) - Two awards per year will be provided to faculty for academic/ summer release to incentivize the development and submission of grant applications.

Community-based, Capacity-building and Translation Research Grants (up to $20,000) - One award per year will be provided to a researcher to partner with a community organization to conduct pilot collaborative capacity-building and translation research. A faculty member and community member will serve as Co-PIs all subsequent on this grant.
Capacity-building may include training and other activities designed to strengthen an organization's or community's ability to adapt and apply a public health intervention.

Cooperative Grant ($20,000) -One award per year will be provided to support collaborative research projects between faculty from at least two of the different participating universities or colleges. Priority will be given to projects that involve one of the Center's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and that involve seeking larger external funding.

Interested faculty should contact Shakiyla for more information regarding the required coversheet and indirect rates prior to finalizing their proposals for submission.

Worldwide

The World Health Organization (WHO)'s Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability (VIP) section held its 19th Meeting with the Heads of WHO Collaborating Centers on Injury and Violence Prevention on Sept. 28-29th
  • The meeting provided a rich opportunity to exchange information about collaborative projects, update one another on progress in key areas, and plan future collaborations.
  • Remarks were also heard from representatives from three centers which are in the designation process.
  • A number of specific outcomes will be followed up by VIP and Heads of the WHO Collaborating Centers, including support for the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Moscow, a project to identify local injury and violence prevention successes, and increased WHO Collaborating Centers involvement in capacity development (e.g. via webinars, contributions to TEACH-VIP 2nd Edition, dissemination of information regarding MENTOR-VIP, etc.).
