Winter Makes Early Arrival in San Juans

Winter has been knocking on the front door of the San Juans the past few weeks and made an impressive entrance last Wednesday when a 48-hour storm dumped between 13 and 40 inches of snow throughout the region. The system pounded Wolf Creek - the ski area received close to 40 inches. It was so much snow that the ski area had its earliest opening day ever and the first ski day in North America for 2011. Terrain in our permitted area received around 12 to 14 inches of snow.

We are hoping winter decides to settle into San Juans and storms keep tracking our way!

With the snow flying, the San Juan Ski Company is gearing up for the season with new trips, new equipment and new ski gear.

Bob has been reconnoitering access for our new family powder-cats and beginner trips, scouting terrain for our steep clinics and guided backcountry tours and working  on the snowcats and snowmobiles.  We now have a fleet of 10 snowmobiles (enough for guests to double up and drive/ride them to the snowcat rendezvous),  three snowcats and a 15-person snowcoach/van.

If you didn't get a chance to check out new trips in the last newsletter, be sure to click here  for trip descriptions. We  also created a facebook page to keep you informed of all things SJSC. Please show us you like us! click here.

We have joined forces with several Colorado companies this year - Icelantic Boards, BCA and Flylow (see related article and links below) for sponsorship and ski gear.

We look forward to skiing with you this season!

SJSC Brings in Icelantic Skis For Guest Demos
The Gypsy (left) and the Keeper (right)
Replaces old beacons with
BCA Trackers and continues  to
uniform guides in Flylow

We are excited about our partnership with Icelantic Boards and believe that the Colorado company's skis are going to rip in powder!
The graphics are really cool, too.

Our demo fleet consists of the Gypsy - a reverse camber ski that will rock your world; and the Keeper - an early-rise tip and tail ski that will give its skier the ability to float and slash through bottomless pow!

Guests can demo the skis for $28. For best selection, we suggest you reserve skis in advance. If you want to buy a pair (we know you're going to love 'em after skiing on them) Backcountry Experience at DMR is selling them.

We have also replaced our Ortovox F1 transceivers with BCA (Backcountry Access) Trackers. The new transceivers are easier to use since a real-time digital display shows both direction and distance with bright LEDs. God forbid our clients should have to use beacons in search mode, but if they do, that is when the ease of use will matter most.

Our guides and snowcat drivers have been wearing Flylow jackets and pants for a couple of years now and really like the functionality of the gear. This year, the Denver-based company has a great lineup and new products. (Maybe Bob will let the guides wear something other than black)?

Get a t-shirt and a chance to win a free catskiing trip if you correctly answer our trivia question.

Our oldest guide once studied to become a Roman Catholic priest. He attended a Prep Seminary and might have become the first American Pope had he not stumbled on a dictionary and found out what celibacy actually means.  What is the name of the school and where (what  town) was it located?

Send your answer to sanjuanskico@aol.com. The first person to correctly answer the question wins a San Juan Ski Company t-shirt and will be entered into a drawing for a snowcat trip this spring.
Although we received a lot of guesses,  last issue's question was not answered correctly. Please try again! Check out our facebook page for the correct answer.
