Citizens Deserve Better than Special Interests Hijacking Constitution
As new facts were uncovered in a memo from Attorney General Bill Schuette to Governor Rick Snyder, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Michigan blasted efforts by big labor to hijack the Michigan Constitution.
"There is no longer any doubt that the union boss ballot initiative seeks to hijack the Michigan constitution to benefit less than 3 percent of Michigan citizens at the expense of the other 97 percent," said Chris Fisher, President of ABC of Michigan. "Clearly it is impossible for this proposal to legitimately appear on the statewide ballot."
The Attorney General offered unusually scathing criticism of the proposed constitutional amendment specifying that it conflicts with 18 sections of the state constitution and would repeal at least 170 current Michigan laws. Attorney General Schuette concluded that the State Board of Canvassers cannot place the proposal on the statewide ballot this November writing, "at a minimum, the initiative's Trojan horse-style repeal and revision of so many constitutional provisions and statutes cannot possibly be communicated, fairly, in 'not more than 100 words' as the Michigan Constitution requires."
"Any straight forward analysis of the ballot proposal makes clear that it would harm our economy, pick winners and losers based on union status and rip off taxpayers," said Chris Beckering, Director of Business Development at Pioneer Construction in Grand Rapids. "Michigan citizens deserve better than this dangerous attempt to hijack our constitution which appears to only benefit unaccountable union bosses."
