Governor Rick Snyder announced the appointments of ABC members Thomas Erdman and Corey Hannahs to the Electrical Administrative Board.
The Electrical Administrative Board is responsible for licensing and certifying qualified applicants and developing rules and regulations necessary for enforcement of the Electric Safety Act.
"The appointees bring valuable knowledge and skill to the board as it continues to oversee the regulation of the electrical construction industry in Michigan," Snyder said.
Erdman, of Vassar, is president of Nuechterlein Electric Inc. in Frankenmuth. He is a licensed master electrician with nearly 40 years of professional experience in the electrical industry. Erdman is a member of the Frankenmuth Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors and is a former member of the Michigan State Fire Safety Board. He earned a degree in electrical technology from Michigan State University. Erdman will represent electric parts distributors and replaces Joseph Reyes.
Hannahs, of Ann Arbor, serves as president and owner of Hannahs Electric Co. in Ann Arbor. He also serves as an electric apprenticeship instructor and director of education for the Central Michigan Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan. Hannahs is a licensed master electrician. He previously served as an electrician apprentice, journeyman and master for Integrity Electric Inc. in Lansing. Hannahs earned an associate's degree from Lansing Community College. He will represent master electricians serving as a supervisor and replaces Mark Bauer.
Appointees will serve three-year terms expiring Aug. 10, 2014. The appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

REPORT FINDS MICHIGAN NEEDS $1.4 BILLION MORE ANNUALLY TO MAINTAIN ROADS |
|
A bipartisan House workgroup on transportation funding led by state Reps. Rick Olson, R-Saline, and Roy Schmidt, D-Grand Rapids, released a report that confirms findings from the 2008 Transportation Funding Task Force (TF2) that Michigan needs $1.4 billion in additional revenue to maintain its roads and bridges in good or fair condition.
"This is the inconvenient truth of the road funding matter - this is not a dream number, this is a real number," Olson said. "Not only is this an issue of safety for Michigan citizens, but costs will spiral out of control if our roads are not maintained and Michigan cannot afford that."
The goal of the bipartisan workgroup was to recommend funding levels needed to minimize the long-term cost of maintaining Michigan's roads and bridges. A technical analysis team tackled the question using computerized models made possible by road condition data recently gathered by the Asset Management Council. The models use an asset management strategy of applying the right fix at the right time, which minimizes the cost with preventative maintenance, rather than allowing the roads to deteriorate to the point of needing a much higher cost fix.
The report divides the state's paved roads into four categories and sets the following quality goals:
- State trunkline freeways: 95 percent good or fair condition according to PASER ratings
- Remainder of the state trunkline highways: 85 percent good or fair
- Remainder of the federal aid roads: 85 percent good or fair
- Non-federal aid roads that are paved: 85 percent good or fair
"We are at the crossroads, where we can't afford not to maintain our road and bridge conditions across the state - this is a safety and an economic issue that cannot be ignored," Schmidt said.
The study found that more than $1.4 billion in additional revenue is needed annually for years 2012-2015, rising to over $2.6 billion per year by 2023 to achieve the goals set. In 2008, the TF2, an assembly approved by the Legislature and governor, recommended that Michigan at least double its current investment in transportation. The 2010 asset management data showed that more than one-third or 35 percent of Michigan's roads are in poor condition.
The release of the report comes just a month before Gov. Rick Snyder is set to unveil his transportation infrastructure agenda in October.
"These calculations would not result in a diamond or gold plated road system, this is merely preservation and maintenance cost," Olson added. "We hope our colleagues will see the writing on the wall before it's too late."
The group also warned that if the investment recommendations are not met, the deferred costs of maintaining roads will continue to rise and Michigan leaders will be forced to accept low quality roads. The new investment recommendations do not reflect any desire to add roads, expand capacity, or provide new money to public transit.
Olson and Schmidt plan to present the report before the full House Transportation Committee in the coming weeks. The full report is available online at: www.repolson.com.

REGENCY GROUP MAINTAINS ELITE STATUS AS BEST PRACTICES AGENCY |
|
Regency Insurance Group is part of an elite group of independent insurance agencies around the United States participating in the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big "I") "Best Practices" Study Group. Regency Group has maintained the "Best Practices Agency" since 2000 and there are currently only three other agencies in Michigan with this recognition.
Each year since 1993, IIABA and Reagan Consulting, an Atlanta-based management consulting firm, join forces to study the country's leading agencies in six revenue categories. The agencies comprising the study groups are selected every third year through a comprehensive nomination and qualifying process and awarded a "Best Practices Agency" designation. The selected "Best Practices" agencies retain their status during the three-year cycle by submitting extensive financial and operational data for review each year.
"We are honored that our industry peers have once again awarded us this esteemed designation for over ten consecutive years," says Tim Hanna, Regency Insurance Group, President and CEO. "As an employee-owned company that specializes in affinity marketing, every employee has a vested interest in providing service beyond our clients' expectations."
More than 1,200 independent agencies throughout the U.S. were nominated to take part in the annual study, but only 224 agencies qualified for the honor. To be chosen, the agency had to be among the 35-40 top-performing agencies in one of six revenue categories.
The agency was nominated by either an IIABA affiliated state association or an insurance company and qualified based on its operational excellence.
The Best Practices Study was initiated by IIABA in 1993 as the foundation for efforts to improve agency performance. The annual survey and study of leading independent insurance agencies documents the business practices of the "best" agencies and urges others to adopt similar practices.

ABC CONDEMNS NLRB ON UNION FAVORITISM |
|
In advance of the Sept. 22 U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing to examine the culture of union favoritism by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) released the following statement:
"Under the Obama administration, the NLRB has been transfrmed from a neutral arbiter of labor law disputes into an activist organization to promote the special interests of politically powerful unions," said ABC Vice President of Federal Affairs Geoff Burr. "Recent NLRB rulemakings and decisions will have negative implications for workers, consumers, businesses and the economy.
"While the misnamed Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), or card check legislation, was defeated in Congress with bipartisan support, President Obama's NLRB continues to try to achieve EFCA by administration policy," Burr said.
"As we all try to deal with the economic challenges before us, it is unfortunate that the NLRB continues to move forward with policies that threaten to paralyze the construction industry and stifle job growth," Burr said. "We commend members of the committee for holding this hearing and shining light on the recent actions of the pro-union board."
