Living Authentically
Aligned Stones
Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.
- Ayn Rand, philosopher

Authenticity has gained steam as more people look for peace and happiness in today's turbulent political and economic times.  But what is authenticity?  Does it mean being completely honest in all situations?  Does it mean always living in the moment?  Does it mean living within your values?  Does it mean knowing and walking in your life purpose?

Well, yes, each of these can define authenticity for different people; however, one common underlying theme is truthfulness.  When you are authentic, you are being true.  To what, you may ask - true to your upbringing, your values, your beliefs, your commitments, your word?  Being authentic means living a life where your behaviors match your true self.  There is no difference, no matter what venue, people, or circumstances comes your way.  It is perfect alignment.

So why don't we all live authentically?

Greetings!

DR. PHIL'S LIFE LAW: DO YOU GET IT?

I Googled "life strategies" the other day and got 24,200,000 results.  Wow!  How does someone wade through all of that?  Ok, I did what many people would do: Go to the expert!  Sure enough, Dr. Phil ranks #2 on Google.  He must be the expert.

Here's what Dr. Phil has to say: "When you go through life, you want to ask yourself, 'Am I one of those who just doesn't get it?'  And if so, sit down and think about it. Don't spend your whole life working for what you don't want, instead of for what you do want. Sometimes it takes risk; it gets scary, but if you're going to do it, work toward something that matters to you.  One of the things I get so concerned about with people is when they don't have something they're moving toward in their life."   Dr. Phil goes on to explain that saying you don't have a direction is like saying there is nothing in your life that you are excited about. "You have to figure out what that is, and you have to make a plan to get to it. And the plan has got to have a timeline. You have to choose something that you can afford to do and then lock it in and passionately do it," he says.  Notes on Monitor
"Are you really living or just existing? Existing is instinctual; it is involuntary, reactive self-preservation, with the primary goal of just getting from one day to the next without regard to quality. Living, on the other hand, is the exercise of certain learned skills, attitudes, and abilities that you have acquired and honed to a sharp and focused edge."

Hmmm, how about Dr. Phil?  I like where he is coming from.  In fact, that's what we are all about!  That's what The Retreat at Hidden Treasure is all about!

I developed this newsletter because I'm passionate about helping organizations and individuals a.) Understand their strengths b.) Have a vision and plan that maximizes their potential and c.) Align their resources in such a way they actually walk in their vision.

I hope you find this to be a helpful resource for your journey!
Integration  vs. Compartmentalization

IntegrationWork.  Marriage.  Family.  Health.  Finances.  Church.  Community.  School.  Good Friends.  Acquaintances.  These are just some of the buckets, or compartments, into which we often segment our lives in order to deal with all of the pressure and stress of this day and age.  This "divide and conquer" strategy enables many of us to tackle what we feel is important, while minimizing what we feel is not important or even negative.

Compartmentalization.  On one hand, it is a coping mechanism that helps us deal with life.  On the other hand, it can cause us to be shallow as we quickly move from bucket to bucket.  Furthermore, the compartmentalization life strategy lends itself to "gaps" between life buckets - much like department silos do in some organization structures.  These gaps often result in missed opportunities for enriching our life.

What might be an alternative life strategy?

10 Tips For Wearing Multiple Hats

Multiple HatsThe other day, my wife asked me to take a look at some new shoes she bought.  You know, she was excited and wanted her trusted companion to share in her joy.  I responded as you might expect: "How much did those cost?  You know, with the economy the way it is, we can't just be throwing it all over the place."  That didn't go over all that well.

"You look tired.  Are you getting enough sleep?  How are your eating habits?" the boss stated forcefully to the employee.  The employee felt like she was being scolded by her mom.  Ouch.  Sounds like a parent at work, eh?

Upon further reflection, it donned on me that I was responding to people around me differently than what they were expecting of me.  In other words, they wanted a husband and father; I was being the business manager and company owner.  Hmmm, might I be suffering from some role confusion?

Hey, how do you juggle all of this stuff?
