FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Friend of Creative Nonfiction:
There is an old French proverb, "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose," which translates loosely to "the more things change, the more they stay the same." Today, as the publishing industry struggles to adjust to shifting market demands and new technologies, I find great comfort in the sentiment.
If you're a subscriber (or, perhaps, friends with us online through Facebook or Twitter), you're aware that Creative Nonfiction has undergone a transformation of its own this year, evolving from a literary journal to a quarterly magazine--but our metamorphosis is far from complete. We are currently expanding our educational mission and our role as the voice of the genre. Our mentoring program, currently in its tenth year, now includes online courses, and by this time next year, we'll have a new website, with more content and functionality.
Every day, our magazine finds new readers and reaches a wider audience. In the last year alone, our subscriber base has increased by 50%, our web visitors have nearly doubled, and CNF is now available in bookstores around the globe.
We're proving that there is, and always will be, an audience for a beautifully crafted print publication, and a hunger for true stories, well told. That's something that will never change.
But we cannot do this on our own. In fact, we could never have survived this long if it weren't for past donors. Unfortunately, subscriptions alone do not offset the expenses of the magazine and CNF's other projects, and we depend on additional support from individuals, like you. I hope you'll consider giving an additional, tax-deductible gift now to support Creative Nonfiction's expanding responsibilities. Your donation will aid us in supporting and nurturing writers and their work and will help ensure that CNF remains the voice of the genre.
With tremendous gratitude and best wishes for the holiday season and the new year,
Lee Gutkind

DISTRACTIONS: WHAT WE READ WHEN WE SHOULD BE WORKING
NEWS: Google joins the $1 billion e-book business by launching Google eBooks, and The New York Times announces it will publish separate e-book best-seller lists, starting in the new year. "Bad Writing," a documentary by Vernon Lott, has its Hollywood premiere; we're waiting for the film to open in Pittsburgh so we can see excerpts from the interview with Lee Gutkind filmed at CNF HQ last summer. In the meantime, here's The Review Review's interview with Lee.
REVIEWS: Patti Smith wins the National Book Award for nonfiction for her memoir, Just Kids, and reads an excerpt on NPR. Creative Nonfiction appeals to even the most dedicated fiction reader, writes the USA Character Approved Blog.
CONCERNS: The Paris Review Daily warns against idolizing your favorite author and presents a cautionary tale involving Norman Mailer and Ernest Hemingway. The HTML Giant crowd debates the "expedited submission fee"--would you pay to have your work read faster?

CNF MENTORING PROGRAMS
CNF's mentoring programs have always offered writers of all levels one-on-one access to accomplished mentors (who, by the way, aren't just great writers, but experienced teachers and editors, too).
Now CNF is excited to offer two brand new online classes that allow writers to enjoy collaboration with colleagues and receive professional feedback, starting in the new year. Due to overwhelming interest we've added new sections of each class, open now!
Basics in a Nutshell will introduce writers to the basics of creative nonfiction, exploring both the techniques used to gather information and the literary skills needed to turn bare facts into personal and compelling essays. Registration Deadline: January 17
Writing the Personal Essay takes a close look at the writing and research skills needed to write a memoir or personal essay. We'll discuss how to best use essential literary elements such as detail, dialogue, structure, and description, as well as how to collect information through interviews, research, and other methods. Registration Deadline: January 17
Visit our website for in-depth weekly course breakdowns.
