NEWS
Issue38CoverAfter the initial rush of creating a new magazine and sending it out into the world--the traveling, the launch parties, the constant high-fives--life has returned to normal for our editors (even Lee is back to truckin', this time in Australia... more on that below). But normal is good, allowing us to focus our efforts on our summer issue.

Issue #39 will include a special 30th anniversary tribute to Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song, featuring an excerpt from the landmark text and reflections from Doris Kearns Goodwin and others. The issue will also feature new writing from Phillip Lopate, Heidi Julavits, Robin Hemley, and a number of up-and-coming writers (including the winners of the CNF MFA Program Off and the Norman Mailer College Nonfiction Writing Contest), plus blogs* and tweets, and much more.

* Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a blog post and/or encouraged others to do the same. We received more than 800 nominations and are working our way through the posts as quickly and as carefully as we can. We'll be announcing the ten finalists here, as well as on our Facebook and Twitter pages. The winning post won't be revealed until the issue hits newsstands in late summer..

If you
subscribe today we'll start you off with Issue #38, which boasts long-form essays by Carolyn Forché,
Bill McKibben, Virginia Morell, and others, plus a conversation with Dave Eggers, columns by Phillip Lopate and Richard Rodriguez, excerpts from new books by David Shields and Rebecca Skloot, and much, much more.

Check out our website for the full table of contents, as well as exclusive online content, including David Shields' reading (and watching) guide; eleven easy steps to becoming a stunt writer; Dinty W. Moore's notes on boundary-pushing; and an interactive list (you can add your own suggestions) of the best first lines; and there's more to come.

EVENTS
LeeDownUnderCreative Nonfiction's editor, Lee Gutkind, will be spending the first part of the summer Down Under. The popularity of creative nonfiction (the genre, and we hope, soon, the magazine) is spreading rapidly down there, and Lee will be helping add fuel to that fire. From May 26 through June 15 Lee will be giving lectures and talks throughout Australia and New Zealand (the full schedule can be found in the left-hand column). If you're in the area (or know some one who is), feel free to join in; all events are open to the public.

If you're stuck stateside, not to worry: you can catch up with Lee in a different way. The Marketplace of Ideas is streaming an interview and the TriQuarterly Online has an interview with Lee and his son, Sam, about their new book Truckin' with Sam.

ATTN: CNF MFA PROGRAMS

Thanks to the BNY Mellon Audience Development Fund, CNF is offering nonfiction MFA Programs and their students the following:

1. A complimentary four-issue subscription for the department.

2. Subsidized CNF subscriptions to MFA students (4-issues for $12 rather than the normal $32)

3. Complimentary copies of our Issue #39 for graduate-level classes and the option to bring a CNF editor into the classroom (via conference call, Skype, or in person, depending where you are) for a discussion of the issue.

We are currently reaching out to nonfiction MFA program administrators. If you teach in a program and would like more information, please email us.

DISTRACTIONS: WHAT WE READ WHEN WE SHOULD BE WORKING.

* THINGS THE INTERNET IS SAYING ABOUT ISSUE #38:

New Pages found the writing "strong, engaging, expertly crafted, deeply satisfying, and beautifully composed"; the publication of the new CNF, along with a few other new magazines, caused Mr. Magazine to proclaim that "PRINT IS NOT DEAD!"; Robert Birnbaum over at The Morning News called the new magazine (along with the new releases from Ploughshares and A Public Space) "a righteous buffet of tasty prose"; Bookslut used the new issue as a launching point to expound on the scope and breadth of the entire genre; and Harper's Links was tickled by Step #3 of our Armchair Guide to Stunt Writing

* THINGS THE INTERNET IS SAYING ABOUT WRITING AND PUBLISHING:

Patrick Madden apologizes for his scandalous behavior; The Millions talks food writing (and if you feel inspired by the piece, note that we've got a Food Issue in the works); Rebecca Skloot goes Hollywood; Writer 2.0 posted a very comprehensive list of Journalism Fellowships; apparently David Shields does like stories after all; SMU Press is in trouble; a new issue of Brevity is online; the New York Times compares the "green-ness" of an iPad vs. a book; VQR searches for the next generation of American war literature; Stanford's library goes book-less; and the Columbia Journalism Review uncovers the true founder of New Journalism.
SUBMISSIONS CALLS
Pushing the Boundaries

Postmark deadline - June 4

We are currently seeking experimental nonfiction for our "Pushing the Boundaries" section ("Experimental," "boundaries," yes, these can be loaded terms). We want writing that blows our minds with its ingenuity, essays that not only push the boundaries of the genre, but tear down the borders. Be ambitious and send us work like we've never seen before.

As always, there's only one stipulation--the pieces must be true.

Submissions must be postmarked by June 4, 2010, and "Pushing the Boundaries" must be clearly marked on the envelope and cover letter.

We are always on the lookout for true stories, well-told, about any subject.

For complete submissions guidelines and to view guidelines for other upcoming CNF issues and contests please visit us online.
NEW BOOK BY LEE (and SAM) GUTKIND

Truckin with SamTRUCKIN' WITH SAM: A Father and Son, The Mick and The Dyl, Rockin' and Rollin', On the Road

Some people may not know that Lee Gutkind is not just the Godfather behind Creative Nonfiction, he's also a real-life father--what some people call an 'old new dad,' because he was in his middle forties when his son Sam was born.

For five summers, Sam and Lee traveled the world together, moving around spontaneously in the spirit of the Grateful Dead's song Truckin'.

Now, they have written a book about their journeys and their conflicts along the way: a real-life portrait of bonding, personal conflict and adventure.

Pre-order this perfect Father's Day gift today. Books ship June 1.

TwitterFYI--the CNF Daily Twitter Contest is another way to get your work into CNF. That's right, ten past winners appear in our new issue, and we will be publishing more in upcoming issues.

Still not sure what we're looking for? Here are a few recent winners, to serve as examples and inspiration:

amalchik When you're a teen, the words take on fear, and denial, and shame. When you're 32, married, the response is *finally*: "I'm late." #cnftweet

CNF's No-Residency Mentoring Program

Flexible schedule. One-on-one interaction. Customized courses.

Here at Creative Nonfiction, we understand that not everyone wants or needs a degree to become a better writer. We also understand that in economic times such as these, there aren't a lot of people with the funds to invest in a two to three year MFA program or even a summer conference.

CNF's mentoring programs offer writers of all levels one-on-one access to accomplished mentors (who, by the way, aren't just great writers, but experienced teachers and editors, too).

So this year, save the money you'd be spending on travel, lodging, and tuition and get the personalized attention you want and deserve.

Work with the experts, and make an investment in your writing career now!

For more information, click here or email the mentoring director, Stephen Knezovich at knezovich@creativenonfiction.org.

Educator's Discount
