Great newsIssue38Cover: Creative Nonfiction hits the mail early next week, so the new magazine will be in subscribers' hands  and on bookstores' shelves very, very soon.

If you're still
not yet a subscriber, there's never been a better time. After fifteen years, CNF has a new look and more, diverse content--and the first issue contains amazing words by and with some of today's biggest nonfiction writers--Dave Eggers, Rebecca Skloot, Phillip Lopate and Carolyn Forche, just to name a few. But don't take our word for it; check out the table of contents for yourself.

There's nothing more exciting than a brand new magazine ... except maybe brand new, exclusive online content, including David Shields' reading (and watching) guide; eleven easy steps to becoming a stunt writer; Dinty W. Moore's notes on boundary-pushing; and an interactive list of the best first lines; and there's more to come. Seriously, it doesn't get any better than this.

Okay, so maybe it does. There are still two upcoming (re)launch events, which means two more opportunities to pick up a free copy of the new magazine, rub elbows with CNF editors, staffers, and friends, and help us celebrate this milestone.

Bethesda, MD, March 20, 5-7 pm
The Writer's Center, 4508 Walsh Street

Come unwind with participants and presenters following the Writing the Future Conference (details here). Featuring a talk and presentation by CNF editor Lee Gutkind and a reading by a special guest. (Hint: she's in the new issue).

Denver, CO, April 9, 7-10 pm
The Shag Lounge, 830 15th Street

Relax after a long day at the AWP conference, drink some drinks, and listen to readings from the finalists and winner of the MFA Program-Off Contest... all this within stumbling distance of the Colorado Convention Center and conference hotels.

SUBMISSIONS CALLS
Postmark deadline - April 2, 2010!

For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about the bonds--emotional, ethical, biological, physical, or otherwise--between humans and animals. We're looking for stories that illustrate ways animals (wild and/or domestic) affect, enrich, or otherwise have an impact on our daily lives.

There is a $20 reading fee--$25 covers the reading fee AND gets you a 4-issue subscription to CNF. Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1500 in prizes.

Submissions must be postmarked by April 2, 2010, and "Animals" must be clearly marked on the envelope and cover letter.

GENERAL
We are always on the lookout for true stories, well-told, about any subject.

For complete submissions guidelines and to view guidelines for other upcoming CNF issues and contests please visit us online.
BOOK OF THE MONTH

Becoming a Doctor: From Student to Specialist, Doctor-Writers Share Their Experiences (W.W. Norton)

Issue38CoverThis new collection of essays edited by Lee Gutkind and written by some of the best names in medical writing today is a must read for anyone who is a doctor, or is studying to be a doctor, or--for that matter--has ever gone to the doctor.

These original, true stories create a vivid mural of the medical world and provide invaluable insight for both doctors in training and longtime physicians. The stories span the spectrum of the medical profession, from the first experience with a cadaver to reflections from veteran physicians about living the medical life.

FYI--the CNF Daily Twitter Contest is another way to get your work into CNF. That's right, ten past winners appear in our new issue, and we will be publishing more in upcoming issues.

Still not sure what we're looking for? Here are a few recent winners, to serve as examples and inspiration:

CNF's No-Residency Mentoring Program

Flexible schedule. One-on-one interaction. Customized courses.

Here at Creative Nonfiction, we understand that not everyone wants or needs a degree to become a better writer. We also understand that in economic times such as these, there aren't a lot of people with the funds to invest in a two to three year MFA program or even a summer conference.

CNF's mentoring programs offer writers of all levels one-on-one access to accomplished mentors (who, by the way, aren't just great writers, but experienced teachers and editors, too).

So this year, save the money you'd be spending on travel, lodging, and tuition and get the personalized attention you want and deserve.

Work with the experts, and make an investment in your writing career now!

For more information, click here or email the mentoring director, Stephen Knezovich at knezovich@creativenonfiction.org.
