The CNF Redesign Launch Events
As the "new" Creative Nonfiction inches closer to the printer, we've realized that--for months now--life around the office has been all work and no play...

So, to rescue ourselves from any impending dullness, we are planning a handful of launch events to celebrate our new beginning. Specifics are forthcoming, but go ahead and mark your calendars for launches in:

Pittsburgh, PA, Feb. 24
Chicago, IL, March 4
Bethesda, MD, March 20
Denver, CO, April 9

More details coming soon!

Announcing: The MFA Student Essay Contest
Spread the word: CNF is seeking new work by MFA students for publication in CNF #39 (due out July 2010).

Essays will be judged by Barbara Lounsberry, co-author (along with Gay Talese) of Writing Creative Nonfiction: The Literature of Reality. The winner and finalists will be invited to read at a special event during this year's AWP Conference in Denver (April 2010; details forthcoming). Postmark deadline is January 28, 2010.

[For more info, see the "Submission Calls" section, or click here.]

Holiday Sale Prices Extended
Still looking for that perfect gift for the writer in your life? Is that writer you? CNF has you covered; we've extended our holiday sale prices to the end of the year.

We're offering discounts on 4-issue subscriptions and some of our most popular products. (Here are some suggestions...)

Give a Gift to CNF
It's worth noting that the most valuable form of support you can offer Creative Nonfiction is by becoming a subscriber or extending an existing subscription. But if you'd like to give CNF a gift this holiday season, please consider making an additional contribution. Unfortunately, revenue from subscriptions does not cover the cost of producing CNF, and we depend in part upon the support of individual donors.

To make a tax deductible donation to CNF, click
here. We'll gratefully count you among the "new" magazine's Founding Friends, and your contribution will help us support and nurture writers and their work. Thank you!

Submission Calls

PLEASE NOTE: THE DEADLINE FOR END OF LIFE STORIES IS DECEMBER 31, 2009!

Creative Nonfiction is again working with the good folks at SMU Press, this time on a collection tentatively titled "End of Life Stories."

For this collection, we are seeking essays that explore death, dying, and end of life care. We're looking for stories from physicians, nurses, hospice workers, counselors, clergy, family members, and others. Narratives should highlight current features, flaws, and advances in the health care system. Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with a significant element of research or information.

There is a $20 reading fee--$25 covers the reading fee AND gets you a 4-issue subscription to CNF. Creative Nonfiction editors will award $2500 in prizes.

Submissions must be postmarked by December 31, 2009,
and "End of Life Stories" must be clearly marked on the envelope and cover letter.

Win a reading at the 2010 AWP Conference in Denver, publication in the summer 2010 issue of CNF, and bragging rights for your program!

Essays will be judged by Barbara Lounsberry, co-author (along with Gay Talese) of Writing Creative Nonficiton: The Literature of Reality.

Guidelines:
  • Contest is open to any student currently enrolled in an MFA creative writing program.
  • Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, no more than 3,000 words, and unpublished.
  • This is a blind read; your name should appear only in the cover letter, and each page of the manuscript should include the title of the piece.
  • No excerpts will be considered; your submission should be a single and complete piece.
  • Only one submission per author will be considered.

Submissions must be postmarked by January 28, 2010, and "MFA Program-Off" must be clearly marked on the envelope and cover letter.

For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about the bonds--emotional, ethical, biological, physical, or otherwise--between humans and animals. We're looking for stories that illustrate ways animals (wild and/or domestic) affect, enrich, or otherwise have an impact on our daily lives.

There is a $20 reading fee--$25 covers the reading fee AND gets you a 4-issue subscription to CNF. Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1500 in prizes.

Submissions must be postmarked by April 2, 2010, and "Animals" must be clearly marked on the envelope and cover letter.

GENERAL
Finally, we are always on the lookout for true stories, well-told, about any subject.

We're looking for strong reportage; well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice; an informational quality or instructive element that offers the reader something to learn (an idea, concept or collection of facts, strengthened with insight, reflection and interpretation); and a compelling, focused, sustained narrative that is well-structured, makes sense and conveys meaning.

General submissions are accepted year round and there is no reading fee.

Please send all manuscripts, accompanied by a cover letter with complete contact information, SASE, and payment (when necessary) to:

The Great Twitter Experiment

By now, the CNF Daily Twitter contest is nothing new. After six months, it has officially become a bona fide online community of micro-essayists. But here's a reminder: A handful of CNF Tweets will appear in the "new" CNF.

That's right, the CNF Daily contest is another way to get your work in print. Micro-essays, after all, are still essays.

Still not sure what we're looking for? Here are a few recent winners, to serve as examples and inspiration:

November 27
JHammons My grandmother's Thanksgiving recipe: tumbler of vodka. No ice. #cnftweet

November 30
spitballarmy The $10.90 debt hung on for months, the rain turned their dusty Oklahoma town to mud, but the train always came at the right time. #cnftweet

December 3
inthemilk Errors often produce the finest results. Think: Post-it Notes. Think: Chocolate chip cookies. Think: My youngest son. #cnftweet

December 5
sarahgilbert went to feed chickens on winter's coldest day, feathers were everywhere, 2 girls shivering after what must have been battle royale. #cnftweet

All of the winners are available on our profile page under the "Favorites" tab, and the finer details of the contest are below:

Can you tell a true story in 130 characters or less? Think you could write twenty CNF-worthy tweets a day? Go for it. We dare you. There's no limit and submitting is easy. Simply tag your creative nonfiction tweet with the trending topic #cnftweet, and then hit "Update." That's it.

Our editors pick a daily winner and re-tweet the best of the day.
CNF No-Residency Mentoring Program

Flexible schedule. One-on-one interaction. Customized courses.

Here at Creative Nonfiction, we understand that not everyone wants or needs a degree to become a better writer. We also understand that in economic times such as these, there aren't a lot of people with the funds to invest in a two to three year MFA program or even a summer conference.

CNF's mentoring programs offer writers of all levels one-on-one access to accomplished mentors (who, by the way, aren't just great writers, but experienced teachers and editors, too).

So this year, save the money you'd be spending on travel, lodging, and tuition and get the personalized attention you want and deserve.

All of our courses are tailored to meet your specific needs, whether you're looking for help kick-starting a writing project or putting the final touches on a manuscript. Our mentors can help you set realistic goals, illuminate your skills, address your weaknesses, and help build your confidence as a writer. We can help with book proposals, as well.

Work with the experts, and make an investment in your writing career now!
