News and Happenings
Best Creative Nonfiction, Volume 3 will be headed to subscribers and bookstores by summer's end. But before its arrival we want to make a few announcements: 1) The book is available for pre-order ($15.95) on our website, where you can find the complete table of contents and author statements about the stories behind the stories. Or, better yet, become a subscriber and we'll send Best 3 directly to you as part of the subscription.
2) As has been the MO of past Best collections, Volume 3 also features the best of the blogosphere.
In the past, CNF's editors scoured the deepest corners of the internet in search of the best of the best. The selection process this time around, however, was a bit different. We asked you, the readers, to nominate your favorite blog posts. The response was a bit overwhelming, but we eventually whittled the list down to the following eight:
Congratulations are in order for both the winners and the nominators... we literally could not have done it without you.
[Note: Due to the success of the Best collections, we've decided to feature blogs in the regular journal. We will be re-opening the blog nomination process soon, so start compiling your favs now!]

On a separate note, fom July 20-31, we'll be hosting a virtual summer yard sale on our website. Save up to 80% off books and back issues, plus take advantage of the last opportunity to
start a new subscription with Issue 36: "First Lede, Real Lead"!

Submissions Wanted: "End of Life Stories"
Creative Nonfiction is again working with the good folks at SMU Press, this time on a collection tentatively titled "End of Life Stories."
For the collection, we are seeking essays that explore death, dying, and end of life care. We're looking for stories from physicians, nurses, hospice workers, counselors, clergy, family members, and others. Narratives should highlight current features, flaws, and advances in the healthcare system. Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with a significant element of research or information.
There is a $20 reading fee--$25 covers the reading fee AND gets you a 4-issue subscription to CNF. We're offering $2500 in prizes and the deadline for submissions is December 31, 2009.
Please forward this call to anyone who may be interested.
For more information and complete guidelines, visit us online or email us at information@creativenonfiction.org.
And if you're interested in healthcare stories, check out our past collaborations with SMU Press, Silence Kills: Speaking Out and Saving Lives and Rage and Reconciliation: Inspiring a Health Care Revolution.

The Great Twitter Experiment The CNF Daily Twitter contest rolls on, and we've been surprised by the number of submissions as well as their quality.
Regardless of your feelings about Twitter--love it or hate it--we encourage you all to create a profile, if only to partake in this uber-short writing exercise.
Not sure what we're looking for? Below are a few of the daily winners, to serve as examples and inspiration:
June 16 MiaRoseM #cnftweet: Awake in bed, I wait for the redeye. Pitch black minutes turn to hours, and mingle with a mottled sleep. Sunlight, and he's home.
June 30 lucysky #cnftweet: I told him my life was irreparably broken but thanks for the dinner and the ice-cream and the beer and change for the jukebox.
July 5 appekrahe #cnftweet: Who would have guessed a bee could bring a new human into the world? Sting, allergic reaction, ER nurse, smile, more smiles. You.
July 7 amalchik #cnftweet: "The story of the world is trying to speak through me," Mama said, stoned. Jessie sighed. "Sit up. You're getting married today."
All of the winners are available on our profile page under the "Favorites" tab, and the finer details of the contest are below.:
Forget 6-word memoirs. Can you tell a true story in 130 characters or less? Think you could write one hundred CNF-worthy tweets a day? Go for it. We dare you. There's no limit and submitting is easy. Simply tag your 130-character creative nonfiction tweet with the trending topic #cnftweet, and then hit "Update." That's it.
Our editors pick a daily winner and re-tweet the best of the day. And who knows? If this goes well, you may even find your tweet in an upcoming issue of Creative Nonfiction.

CNF No-Residency Mentoring Program
Flexible schedule. One-on-one interaction. Customized courses.
Here at Creative Nonfiction, we understand that not everyone wants or needs a degree to become a better writer. We also understand that in economic times such as these, there aren't a lot of people with the funds to invest in a two to three year MFA program or even a summer conference.
CNF's mentoring programs offer writers of all levels one-on-one access to accomplished mentors (who, by the way, aren't just great writers, but experienced teachers and editors, too).
So this year, save the money you'd be spending on travel, lodging, and tuition and get the personalized attention you want and deserve.
All of our courses are tailored to meet your specific needs, whether you're looking for help kick-starting a writing project or putting the final touches on a manuscript. Our mentors can help you set realistic goals, illuminate your skills, address your weaknesses, and help build your confidence as a writer. We can help with book proposals, as well.
Work with the experts, and make an investment in your writing career now!
