Engaging Men Digest - September 2010

Welcome to the September issue of the SATF's Engaging Men Digest!  This month our prevention staff has been busy presenting at the Oregon Prevention Conference, supporting the Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Service in their cultivation of the new Marion County Men Against Violence, and working with a new research assistant from Portland State University!  While we are at it we want to make sure we keep you up to date with the latest news, ideas, and resources pertaining to the engagement of men in the prevention of gendered violence, so check out what we have for you this month...

The News:

- Pacific Lutheran University's Men Against Violence are putting on "Paving a Rocky Road: Removing Barriers to Men's Engagement", a conference that seeks to broaden the ways our movement to end gendered violence seeks engages those who identify as male while challenging us all to explore the intersections of oppression and violence.  The conference, October 14th-16th,  includes a presentation on intersectionality from our prevention specialist, Cliff Leek, as well as lectures and workshops from many regional and national experts.  Registration is open!

- Kristopher Wells, a researcher with the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services at the University of Alberta, wrote a fabulous piece for the Edmonton Journal (also published on xyonline) about homophobia, hyper-masculinity, and sport culture that can be found here.

- Masculinity made the front page of Newsweek this month.  Writers Andrew Romano and Danny Dokoupil constructed the feature "Men's Lib" taking on the supposed "end of men" and arguing the need for a "New Macho" that involves men deepening their participation in parenting and taking on what have been known as "girly jobs".  Check out their article here.

WAVS logo  - There is some great work happening up in Vancouver, BC!  The Warriors Against Violence Society there is committed to helping First Nations families unlearn abusive and violent behaviors and reclaim their traditional values of equality, honor and respect for themselves and others. WAV began as a program for abusive Native men. Today, there are services for men, women, families and youth. A video made by the organization is here and you can go here to check out their website.  Special thanks to Nancy Greenman for passing this on to us.

Boys and Men Healing- Big Voice Pictures, which previously produced a film called The Healing Years, has now  released a new film, Boys and Men HealingBoys and Men Healing, a documentary about the sexual abuse of boys, focuses on the impact sexual abuse has on the individual and on society as well as on the importance of healing in the survivor's lives.  Check out the trailer here and then find a way to check out the film itself!  I know I will!
