The Lakeside Link                              October 2011

From the Desk of the Chamber President:

Bobbi Buettgenbach

Community is an inside job

Fall is upon us and the Community Expo is behind us but the events sponsored by your Chamber of Commerce just keep coming. I Love a Clean Lakeside is just around the corner. If you need to get rid of any items, perhaps that couch on the porch, or dispose of small electrical items or electronics, shred those receipts from 10 years ago, (that would be me) this Chamber event is for you. The current working date is November 5th. More information will follow. Stay tuned.

Supervisor Dianne Jacob held a town hall meeting at Mario's in Lakeside, last Friday September 30th. While she touched on many items during this 2 hour exchange I would like to mention two in particular. Supervisor Jacob requested help from Lakeside residents and businesses to hold Cal Trans and the Dept. of Public Works responsible for ongoing clean up and maintenance. If you see weeds along the roadside, or areas needing repair please log on to the webs sites below and report your finding. Response time is said to be within 72 hours. Let her office know if that is not the case.

Ca. Dept of Public Works:         www.sdcdpw.org/roadservice/

CalTrans Maintenance Service request:   www.dot.ca.gov

On another note, if you see something that needs to be reported to the Sherriff's office, Report it! If we don't call, the sheriff assumes there are
no problems. Make sure the voice of Lakeside is heard.

The Spirit of Christmas is scheduled for Dec 3. We are planning some changes that we think you will enjoy; however we need some Christmas spirit here! Volunteers are required to run any event and the Spirit of Christmas is no exception. We are facing the very real possibility that we will need to cancel this event because we are in need of help. Do you belong to an organization that looks for ways to help your community? Here is an opportunity. We not only need help on the day of the event, but also in the days preceding and afterward as well. Help decorate the Christmas tree or Maine Avenue. Help the traffic folks with signs and roadblocks. Help clean up after the event. Call the Chamber and submit your name or group name. I am back to my recurrent theme. Participate. Make new contacts. As an individual, organization or business, the more you participant the more you will gain.

The Chamber joins with all of Lakeside in mourning the passing of Optimist President Mike Ames, who knew what Community Spirit was all about.

GOVERNOR'S REALIGNMENT PLAN PUTS OUR COMMUNITY AT RISK
Assemblyman Brian Jones

There are many reasons people enter into public service. For some, it is to gain power and influence. For others it is to make a profound difference for their community.

As a lifelong resident of Santee, I put myself firmly into the second category. And since my early days on the Santee City Council, public safety has been a top priority.

I ran for the State Assembly last year in order to bring some of our community's common sense ideas back to Sacramento. While spending the last year on the Assembly floor I have realized one thing - common sense doesn't seem to carry the day in the State Legislature. Click to read more from Assemblyman Jones

MANY SAN DIEGO BUSINESSES STILL FEELING THE PINCH

Congressman Duncan Hunter

A new report indicates that the number of San Diego small businesses filing for bankruptcy has nearly doubled since the first quarter of 2008. The report serves as another reminder that small businesses, the backbone of the American economy, should be at the forefront of a broader recovery plan. Read more about this issue on Congressman Hunter's website: WWW.hunter.house.gov

A Lakeside Business was hit with a one million dollar ADA non-compliance lawsuit this month.

Senator Joel Anderson

The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce is working with Senator Anderson and planning a workshop to explain to small businesses the changes in the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and explain how they can comply with the law and avoid litigation.

Recently, a Lakeside Business was hit with a one million dollar ADA non-compliance lawsuit. In the past years, areas were targeted and multiple lawsuits were filed against small businesses regarding ADA. We are not sure if this is the case this time, but you need to be   prepared. The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce believes during this current economic   environment, our members cannot afford to be unprepared. Details on the date, time & place will follow as soon as they are made available.

Lakeside Chamber Assists Wounded Warriors

The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce members bought all the remaining tickets for the Wounded Warrior raffle held this past September.  The raffle was sponsored by the American Legion Post 303. The Post Commander Rob Tade mentioned that our wounded service men and women being treated in local hospitals will receive every cent that was generated by the raffle, a total of $1,500. He stated that Lakeside could always be counted on to assist in any project for our veterans.
