From the Desk of the Chamber President:
Fresh Beginnings for Chamber Well spring is here (don't let the snowstorm last week fool you). Spring has always symbolically represented rebirth and fresh beginnings. This month a large focus was placed on our Nomination Committee and reaching out to our membership to solicit new directors as we have 5 directors terming out in July. I am excited about the people who said yes to volunteering, yes to serving our community and yes to helping the Lakeside economy thrive! The announcements will be forthcoming but I can assure you the 2011-2012 Board of Directors represents ALL facets of our beautiful Lakeside and is a team that will push the Chamber to new limits and accomplishments. While spring puts the spotlight on new and fresh it is important that we remember our past and how we got to where we are today. We lost 2 great leaders last month. Rick Smith and Larry Good, two men whose influence deeply affected Lakeside. Larry Good was Chamber president in 1988, a Lifetime Lakeside Optimist member, an elks Lodge member and a member of the Moose Lodge. He served and helped all his life and educated younger men like myself about the value of service; that serving other people is the greatest thing you can do. Another lesson I learned from my friend and Optimist brother was the value of being honest, even when it is tough, and holding to your principles regardless of the reception you may receive. R.I.P Larry you will be missed. I was not lucky enough to know Rick Smith as well as I knew Larry but I know of his accomplishments. Rick's life was a life of service to his community and his resume stunning: Rick was an elected member of the Lakeside Community Planning Group for nearly 30 years (the last 8 as Chair), an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Lakeside Fire Protection District for 20 years including several years as their Board President. Rick was the President of the Fire District's Association of California for two years and was a member of their Board of Directors for several more. He served two years as the President of the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce, received the Harry J. Spence Citizen of the Year award in 1999 and worked closely with County Supervisor, Dianne Jacob, to improve the community of Lakeside while helping to maintain the small-town-feeling that its residents love. I think Rick and Larry both lived as epitomes of the core value of Lakeside - getting it done w/ no accolades because it is the right thing to do. It has often been said that you cannot stop change; it is too strong a force. While I agree that you cannot stop it, I do believe that we can manage it. It is important while moving forward to make sure we honor and maintain the values of the past and the leaders that helped shaped the community today and the values that have come to live and breathe in us.

Reflecting on Another Successful Mixer
The Lakeside Chamber's February 24th Business Mixer at Reflections Salon and Day Spa was another well attended and successful mixer. New owner Margi Curtis and her staff welcomed guests and treated them to tasty food and a coffee bar. Special thanks to Brenda Asaro from Cafe 67 for her donation of a cheese and fruit tray. Margi put together a gift basket that one lucky attendee won as one of the raffle prizes. Guests toured the Salon and had the chance to see all the changes Margi has made, from the new decor to the inviting and relaxing facial room.
Next month's mixer will be held at Eastbound Bar & Grill on March 24th at 6:00. We will see you there! |

A Message From Senator Joel Anderson
Senator Anderson Introduces Emergency Legislation to Protect Taxpayers from IOUs
State Treasurer Warns IOUs May Be On the Way
On the heels of State Treasurer Bill Lockyer's warning that the state may soon issue IOUs, Senator Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon) introduced emergency legislation to help businesses stay afloat in such an event. "IOUs could be a death knell for already struggling California businesses," State Senator Joel Anderson stated. "This emergency legislation could be their life line." Senate Bill 120, if passed and signed into law, would force state agencies and departments to accept the state's IOUs as payments for bills owed to the state. The State of California is facing a whopping $25.4 billion budget deficit. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Treasurer Lockyer stated that California is facing another immediate cash crisis and could issue IOU notes in April or May. In 2009, the state issued billions of dollars of IOUs when it ran out of money. That same year, Anderson introduced a similar proposal to protect businesses when IOUs were issued in place of actual payments. Over 3,000 letters of support flooded Anderson's office from businesses, citizens, and elected officials-including one from State Controller John Chiang. Chiang stated in his letter, "When a person receives an IOU from the State, the State should accept the IOU for payment obligations owed to the State." The bill sailed through both houses of the Legislature and had over 70 bi-partisan co-authors. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the measure. Senator Anderson reintroduced this bill to help California businesses out of the untenable position of having to pay their own bills while the State of California is unable to pay it obligations.

EVERY Business and Non-profit Organization Should Be A Member of The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce
Visibility. Yes, you've heard it said time and time again, that out of sight means out of mind. This is not a smart strategy for any business, especially when times are good. A market can change quickly. As Jim Collins says, good is the enemy of great. This is a great statement, but I'd like to add to it as it relates to marketing. While good is the enemy of great, complacency and short term thinking is the enemy of sustained marketing breakthroughs.
Let's look at a real world example of chamber complacency in action. Having worked with hundreds of chambers throughout North America, I'm simply baffled that within many communities how few real estate agents and automotive sales reps are either non-existent or barely active within their local chamber. In these two highly competitive and crowded markets you'd think these folks would do anything to stand out from the competition and fully leverage the chamber to get an edge. Nope. It's as if they have no idea the local chamber exists and how it can benefit their business.
